Acting weird after grooming
 

We tried a new groomer this week. I'm thinking she cut Baxter's hair around what used to be his testicles kind of short. He has been licking and doing the butt scooting ever since he got home. Has anyone else experienced this? She was supposed to check his anal glands so I wonder if he is just irritated all around.

This last groom the groomer shaved Sophie bum hole a little closer than she usually does and I think it must have felt funny to her cause she kept looking back at it. LOL! Once her hair grew a bit she was fine with it. Keep an eye on it cause she could have bothered one of the glands.

Have you looked at his skin there closely to see if he has any burns or cuts? If he continues scooting I would take him to the vet, he could have an infection in his anal glands.

I usually tell the groomer to scissor cut the rear. That razor can be irritating.

I do the same thing, I would rather it be a little longer in those areas then shaved, its very ichy for them.

I've examined him better than he has ever wanted to be examined for cuts and burns. He's totally ashamed, I've checked so much. Can't find any swelling or any thing. I think she did use a shaver by the looks of it. I think we'll probably go back to the old groomer. My father-in-law has been sick and we just couldn't get to the old groomer. She only works 2 days a week and I had to kinda take what I could get. Live and learn.

Get out your latex gloves and dab a little antibiotic cream with a mild anesthetic back there. I recently used this (Neosporin Plus Pain Relief) on a neighbor's Bichon we were babysitting. His hind end was nasty and I had to suit up in my Hazmat outfit and give him a trim and a cleaning. The antibiotic cream helps a lot.

My daughter-in-laws dog, got too close of cut around the bum, and it turned into a nasty infection, the anal glands weren't affected, but the skin was red and raw, and the dog couldn't leave it alone. She had to go to the vet to get a special cream, but if you use the diaper rash cream, or something that can stop the irritation, an infection might not develop. I never shave Joey's bum for this reason, just a close cut with scissors is good enough. I check it weekly for a bath, and it never gets too long or too short in that area.

From a groomers stand point if that was the only problem with the groom then you need to talk to the groomer. If you liked the haircut and the service dont let the itchy bum steer you away and lablel the groomer inadequate.Most groomers will shave every hiney as standard procedure.It is way safer to used the clippers then scissors back there.Most pets tolerate it well but some will get itchy.I would not ask or let a groomer do anal glands. I know alot of groomers do, but do you trust someone other than a vet to do a medical procedure on that soft delecate tissue that could cause irreparable damage? I dont know where people get the idea this needs to be done every six weeks during grooming. Have the vet check it everytime you go in for an exam, this should be enough on a healthy dog.I only do glands if asked, only externally, and recommend they talk to there vet to get their recommendations on this. I would make a note to the groomer to scissor around his private parts because he gets irritated. I would also call the groomer to see if he may have jummped or sat quick while she was trimming his bum. It could have been just an accident or she could have used a warm blade which would be irritaing. Alot of groomers will use the same blade starting with ears, belly area then bum last thinking that doing it in that order with the same blade is better because you are not shaving ears or around other area after using it on their behind.But the blade will get warm causing irritation.I always use a fresh clean cold blade no shorter a 10 on that area.I shave every behind unless instructed other wise. If I didn't people would complain that I didn't clip their bum short enough.

If the hair is clipped too short, it kind of tickles until it grows in some. I just put A + D ointment on the irritated area until it quits bothering them.

So I took Baxter to the new vet that we are using on Saturday since our old vet is now closed on Saturday. He thinks it was a hot blade that burned Bax's scrotum area. Got some cream for him but my little buddy is still just miserable and tomorrow will be a week since he was groomed. I am glad that we will be able to go back to the old groomer and only used this one in an emergency situation. I wish I had just let him look woolly.

I was just listening to a phone in on radio Lancashire, an elderly lady was asking about dog grooming, she has a mobile groomer with a fully equipped van he takes the dog to the van and does the whole session in the van. I don't know the breed but she said he's big. She was told that she should not do this as it's not essential, I think the answer is wrong as for some breeds grooming is essential for health issues, she clearly could not do this herself. Thoughts?

"If" your question is should a groomer express dogs anal glands. Anal glands IMO should only be expressed if a dog "needs it".
I had a poodle that had build up and anal glands had to be expressed frequently which I had my vet do it. Since owning that poodle I have had 6 yorkies, not one ever needed anal glands expressed and if they would have, I would only have my vet do it.
