Should I gave up on taping her ears? Ok so Lilly is now 5 months. I shaved and tape a ears since she is 10 weeks but even if I leave the tape on for 10 days, they go back down after a few hours. She got a thick dark coat and look really cute with her ears down too but I really, really want them to go up... Should I gave up or keep on trying? |
would love to see pictures...but as far as giving up i wouldn't...maybe she is going thru the teething stage and her ears are not working with you......right now...although Kioko is 1 year 7 months old.....and i think i will one day try again...for my Maltese was 5 years old and her ears were matted so my brother shaved off the hair and it when up! |
At five months, I would not give up. Tate's ears were up for quite a while before he started teething, then they went down. For a couple of months they would go up, down, up, down until they finally started staying down. Two weeks ago, I decided to clip all the hair off his ears - all the way to the base. It looks funny, but within a day they were standing straight up and they've been up ever since. He's 7 1/2 months old now! Good luck! :) |
Have you tried massaging as well? I have also heard some say to give cottage cheese for the calcium to help. Like others have said, try shaving the ears, both sides, and keep taping. Hopefully they will come up, and stay up, when she is done teething. |
I would keep shaving her ears and try massaging too. I didn't do the tape but her breeder did before I got her. :) |
Fiona is 17 months today and i have come to the conclusion that she will only stand her ears straight up when she is really happy, running, or if she wants something! Other than that she has floppy ears and i love them! :aimeeyork |

I am so glad you asked this. I have the same question. Well, mine is already 9 mos old, her ears do stand up but a little flimsy. Is it too late for me to tape it? |
2 Attachment(s) Thanks. I will keep on shaving and taping her ears for a few more months I guess. I have massage her ears but not everyday so I will do it more. Here she is with her ears down. She's cute too. ;) |
2 Attachment(s) I usually cheat and take her picture right after removing the tape.. So here she is with her ears up... or almost... ;) |
oOo what a cutie she is...i wouldn't give up until she is about a year....i regret giving up on Kioko around 6 months old...for the reason i fell in love with the yorkie breed was due to them have the erect ears...but i may shave his ears again...to see if they will stand on their own like my 5 year old maltese did...LOL |

She is such a lil cutie!! |
I'm having the same experience--Stella's left ear has always been up, but her right one is just stubborn. After I took her to the groomer at 4 1/2 months, they were finally both up, but only until she started losing major baby teeth and teething again. I got her groomed again today, and she's having the rest of her baby teeth removed next week during her spay so hopefully I'll trick them into staying up soon! |
There are some ears that are thinner skinned and take a little more effort to get them up. Shaving and keeping the hair off, massaging, taping and not taking the tape off too often, as well as giving calcium supplement is what I have done. The Pet Cal tabs is what I usually have around and I order them from JeffersPets.com It does get discouraging but I wouldn't give up. Good Luck! |
