If he goes to doggie day care could it be kennel cough, it also sounds like reverese sneezing , my dog had kennel cough and was throwing up this flemmy stuff, I took her to the vet because I thought it was collapsed trachea , a week on anti biotic and she was fine. |
Thanks so much for the info jeanm :D With kennel cough don't they COUGH though? He doesn't cough, it's more like an inhaled sneeze. Though I guess there is an occasionally gag-like thing at the end sometimes. Hmmm But he's done this since I got him almost 7 months ago - would kennel cough last that long? |

There is a video on here somewhere that shows a dog making a reverse sneeze noise and a collapsed trachea noise. I seen it about 1 month ago. You may want to search around a bit. I'm at work and kind of busy or I'd have looked for you. It might be helpful and give you some peace of mind till you can get to the Vet later. |

I actually saw those posts and watched those videos and it is one of the major reasons I stopped worrying because I was sure from those videos his was just reverse sneezing, but now I don't know. I really appreciate this board - you guys are the best! |
When my little guy was a puppy, he got sick like that quite often and sometimes for no reason!! His tummy was just kind of sensitive. I stuck to only giving him his dog food and that helped. By his first birthday, he had grown out of his sensitive stomach I'm happy to say. |

This sounds like what my Bichon does. She has seasonal allergies, and will have these "spells" about once or twice a week. She also makes these same noises after she throws up...she has always done this. I talked to the vet and he said not to worry about it. Since we have been giving her a 1/2 tablet a Clariton, she is much better. When she throws up...he said that the flap that keeps the air passage sealed, doesn't go back into place fast enough...and then she'll make the noises till she can get it back in place. We just massage her neck and after a few seconds, she if fine. If she has a longer "spell", she is real mopy for a while after...I guess it makes her tired?. Anyway...I'd have it checked out if it continues or gets worse. I worry about these girls I think more than my own kids...at least the kids can tell us what is going on and how they feel. Mine will throw up sometimes if they have an empty belly...it's foamy. Maybe his belly needed food? Mine will do reverse sneezing every once in a while...Scares the life out of me...and them as well!! They act a little strange when this happens...I think it just scares them. I just lift their head and stroke their throat and tell them it's ok...after a bit they are fine. |
tmirtes1 - That makes me feel better about the puking thing, though he will be 1 just next month. I only give him dog food and the same kind of dog treats, so I know the reason isn't people food or anything like that. Thanks for the info :D Gingergirlsmom - That is actually a different thread than the one I was thinking about and those videos really helped! His DEFINITELY sounds more like the reverse sneezing one. Thanks so much! I am still taking him to check it out Friday though, just for peace of mind. Julie1760 - Yeah, I HATE that they can't just TELL us what is wrong like kids can! Your info put my mind at ease more too. It makes a lot of sense Thanks for replying. BLowry - Well it was FIRST thing in the morning, so maybe the cause was an empty belly! Yeah, he stops whatever he is doing and he looks like it scares him too. His never lasts long either. Those videos seemed to go on MUCH longer than his episodes ever do - his are like a few seconds probably. Thanks! |

Thanks so much ... for posting this link. It is very clear now that what Samantha does is reverse sneezing. She also does regular sneezes from seasonal allergies - like her mom! If it is more than a little, she gets Claritin syrup which clears it right up. Quote:

If it does end up being "reverse sneezing" which is what the yorkie breed is known for just squeeze his nose shut for a couple of seconds so he can catch his breath, that always works for my fur butts. |
When I had Paddy he had a collapsed trachea, confirmed by xray, he lived a full life but on meds. Alfie does the reverse sneeze, gets himself in a pickle with it, I normally stand him up and gently rub his chest, afterwards he has a good cough,he suffers no other probs. Sometimes he go's weeks not doing it then it can happen two or more times in a week. Sometimes I have put it down to gulping his food. |
