First time owner, which sex is better? Hi, I am in looking to adopt my first yorkie and am not sure which ones are better as pets. I am not looking to breed but I thought at first a female would be easier to train and more friendly, but the more I read on here the more I hear that males are better... you imput would be much appreciated :) thanks so much Bri |
Both male and female yorkies are good pets. I however have a male and a female and I prefer my female. She is more cuddly and there are alot of cute girl clothes out there. |
I have one of each and they both have so many great qualities it would be hard to choose one or the other, I think which ever you choose you cant go wrong ;) :thumbup: |
Generally, though there are some exceptions, we have found the boys to be more attentive and constantly cuddly. We call them velcro boys because they stick to your socks. The girls are also affectionate but can be more 'catlike' and distant at times. When we bring home new toys and toss them onto the floor the girls are busy figuring out who gets which and what they like best. The boys are at our ankles doing the YOU'RE HOME dance. It just depends what you are looking for. A good breeder will be able to tell you the personality of their pups and will try to match you with one that will fit your lifestyle. |
Let me start by saying that all Yorkies are wonderful! :D We currently have 2 little males and we absolutely love 'em! So far the training has been pretty easy, they're both quiet and they love to cuddle. We considered a female before we got Riley, and honestly that's kind of what I had my heart set on, but when we found him that was it. Good luck finding your new puppy! |
Both sexes are great....but I do prefer Buster(male). Rylee(female) is sweet, but she cuddles when she wants to....usually she is off doing something. Buster, on the other hand is my most devoted one. He is wherever I am. he even watches me while I shower and scratches at the glass door. Each yorkie is an individual though, and you should base it on the puppies' personality. Hope you find your perfect pup! :) |

That is really a tough one... My little girl was so cuddly and attentive to me. Would always stay right beside of me... no leash ever needed. Of course, when I got Toby, I expected him to be the same. (well not really, as I was really lucky with Sneaker) He has gotten better with cuddles, but only when he's tired, or when he wants to. Please don't get me wrong -- I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world... but my female was more demonstrative. As far as which one is better... I'd say it's a draw! They're all different and all have their own personality. I agree with the post of "let the puppy pick you" if possible! |
I have a girl and she is the boss around here. Don't give me wrong though she is a bundle of love, gives lots of kises, brings her toys to my feet to get my attention so we can play, she loves treats and is just beyond words. On the other hand a have a male pom he is so shy, very scary, really sweet with me but with other people he is vary scared. He is way more calm than her though. :thumbup: |
Personally I think it's more the attitude of a certain puppy than the sex. I picked my male Maltese because he was the puppy I had the best feeling about. He was calm and sweet and although he went through a phase of being an aloof little stinker he is now a total cuddle bug. I picked my female yorkie because she was such a sweetheart, she immediately bonded with me and my husband, she even fell asleep in his arms. I did want a female for my 2nd dog because I'll admit, I wanted to buy lots of pink frilly things for her. :o |
I have to respond to the advice of 'letting the puppy pick you'. Unless you are looking to have an alpha personality pup who will test you every step of the way, it is a bad idea to assume that the one who comes curiously walking up to you first has 'picked' you. We make the mistake of attributing human sensibility to dogs and this is a mistake. This is usually merely the boldest pup in the litter doing his/her job. This is also not to say that the one sitting back in the corner is shy or meek, it may have just woken up. Please find a good breeder and let them pick for you. |
