Yorkie miscarriages Hi there, I have a male Yorkie (Rocky) but would like to get him a biological sister from his mom and dad, the exact same parents. Rocky's mom was due but then miscarried. This make me a little uneasy. I know it is something that naturally happens. I asked the breeder and she said this was the mom's first miscarriage and they only lost one puppy before out of three litters. The mom is not teeny tiny or anything, average size if not a bit larger size. I trust the breeder, but I am still feeling a little cautious. Should I be concerned about the health of any future litters (I reserved a pup for the next one)? Or am I making too big of a deal of this? Thanks in advance for any help. It will be about half a year until they can breed again so I have time to wait (and think!). |

I am not sure how many breedings she's had done in a row. She is four years old now and has had three litters total. Perhaps all three were done in a row or perhaps there was some rest in there. |
There are a few things that can cause a miscarriage ... bacterial infection, including "brucelose"... i believe that is the name... if the male is infected with this can cause the litter to miscarry ... also there are other factors that the breeder may have no control like viral infections ... and of course bad nutrition, over breeding, abuse, ... No matter what any vet i ever had always recommended to wait at least one heat cycle in between breeding's... meaning that no dog should be bred more than once a year.... most breeders i know also say the same... and even on the internet there is a lot of recommendations about waiting in between whelping s to make sure mom has time to recover well.... so she can give the best nourishment for the next litter... Good Luck in your next family addition !! |
