Yes it sure is scary! I know a hawk will try to get a small dog. Owls and Hawks are birds of prey, prey = small animals. I am so happy you did not have a loss! |
We have a field behind our apartments, and a few years ago there were several beautiful, giant, white owls that made a nest up in the trees nearby the kids playground right at the apartments. They always came out at dusk. Flying out towards the field. We always watched them come out. I did not have my Suzi back then. I still do not know what type of owls these were. However, I have seen a couple of them back this year. I have come out late on the baclony. And sure enough, I've seen the beautiful, yet threatning owls out on the field looking for food. Oh dear, My Suzi is out on the balcony, certainly, that owl can't swoop through the balcony bars and grab her? But, it scars the living daylights out of me, I do not allow her to stay out when I see the owl in close proximity . Although the owl is gorgeous , it is scary . that thing has a enormous wing span. It's too close for comfort, and I am thinking, since their is one, their is more around. You can never be too careful! |
We have eagles, owls, and wolves in our area. Misty weighs 5 lbs and does not go outside unless I've checked the yard and only when my English Cocker Spaniel, Mazie is with her. I also have a 1 lb 3 oz Maltese, Cassie, who does not go outside unless I'm with her. She normally uses the wee pads I have in the house. When Misty and Mazie go outside, they each have a long rope attached to them so they stay in the yard. |
Hawks can carry the least amount of weight out of Hawks, owls and eagles. I would worry if either were near mine. coco is about 5lbs but in my eyes I think should would be prey so won't take the chance. She is always on a leash outside with me.. or ocassionally I have her in our fenced in back yard and she still sticks by me like glue. I would be very worried about the owl can carry about 3lbs, and will go for bigger prey as long as they think they can kill it and save some of it for a later meal. Be careful We have a lot of foxes and coyotes here and they are known to have taken off with some neighborhood cats. Nature is amazing but we need to know it's purpose and work around avoiding a pet become a victim of the food chain. :( |
What a gorgeous bird!! So scary though!! Behind my house is a protected piece of land that\'s titled as a "bird sanctuary." I have seen owls and hawks quite a few times in my yard and it scares me to death. So much so that poor little Pixel can never take advantage of my large fenced in yard because his mommy is too paranoid lol I very rarely let him play in the yard without a leash on, unless we are going to play in the screened in pool. He NEVER is allowed outside alone either. I am sure it\'s rare, but with Pixel being less than 5 pounds, I am not taking the chance. :D |
