My ears can't handle it anymore! Hi everyone! I have two yorkies that bark almost 24/7 it seems. I work nights and my husband works days so they don't get alot of time during the week where they are aloud to bark but even if i didn't need to sleep they push it to the limit! We have a doggy door so they are free to go out and in as they please and our fence is chain link so they can see everyone walking by. But they even bark at the neighbors the birds eachother even just for the hell of it sometimes. I can't just close the doggy door because that is the only way they are potty trained, they don't know that they need to ask to go out. Do you have any tricks to make dogs stop barking? The neighbors have commented on it and i dont want them to hate us. I tried one of the sonic noise thingy collars on my little girl and most of the time it didn't even register when she barked and if it did she didn't seem to care that it was beeping. I can't go outside every time they bark because I'm trying to sleep and I would be outside all the time. Thanks for any help! |
The outside barking is a difficult habit to break and unless you can restrict their access, they are going to bark. That said, there are ways that you can entertain them when you need to sleep. They started barking because they were bored and now they enjoy it. You need to exercise them more, especially before you go to sleep. Try going for a long walk to tire them out. Afterwards, give each of them a kong, chew toy or treat ball, stuffed with treats. After they are finished with the treats, they will be so tired, they will probably sleep until you wake up. Also, have you considered having them in the house or room with you? They are less likely to bark if they are inside. And you can correct them if they are inside. To correct them, choose a command (e.g. stop it or no bark) and say it when they are barking. After you have said it, jiggle a can of pennies. They hate the sound and won't want to hear it again. So, to recap: exercise them and give them something to do while you sleep. Correct them when you can, to let them know that it is not alright to bark nonstop. Good luck! I hope this helps. |
