I hope you don't think I jumped on you at all, I don't mean to be rude or anything but I thought I was making a good choice and I don't regret buying my dog but I do regret not finding this site and getting all the important information. Not every story has a bad ending but many do and right now you are only focused on getting your puppy and being happy yes that is what everyone hopes for. I can't tell you how much money I spent on my dog in only about 8-9 short months. For the money I spent I could of easily bought a nice 1,500$ puppy from a great breeder and not had to spend an extra cent on emergency vet costs, are you ready for this possibility? I sure wasn't. I had to borrow money, take time off work to stay home with her and lots of vet visits. Lots of people want you to realize that this may be what you are heading for. Please don't think we are trying to hurt you, we really aren't. I wish you the best and pray that your puppy stay healthy and not have any issues. It is very heartbreaking.

I do think socializing your pup with your aunts pup would be great as much as possible but you won't be able to til she is done all her shots which will put her at about what, 14 weeks or more? The critical weeks will have been long gone and missed. Most puppies do okay leaving earlier, but the toy breeds need their mommies longer and most vets don't have LOTS and LOTS of experience in certain breeds, especially toy breeds and they may go off information they know may be true with a different breed since they have dealt with. I got my dog from Missouri and if you already know that is the Puppymill state!

RachelandSadie 07-27-2009 11:49 AM

that female HAS to be Sadie's sister, and they won't give you the three week old ones, they're not ready yet!! i've seen pictures of them though, they are adorable...

u know something?? Marvin mentioned he buys the moms and dads for 1000 or more, wonder where he gets them from??

thanks again!! the more i think about the whole thing, the more i just want to save my baby and bring her home anyways, i mean if the guy is going to take the mom away from her no matter if i get her or not, i'd rather get her and at least know she's loved and taken care of, sounds crazy, but i just can't help it, i want to rescue her, and in the process of that, i've since met the guy and he doesn't seem so bad, i don't agree with him taking her mommy away that early anymore than you all do, but i can't bear to let him put Sadie out in a kennel, he's had her in the house and plays with her in the yard right now, and someone else may come along and buy her and not love her like we will, so i'm going to get my baby girl, pray for the best, and hope she does just fine...

any advice since i am getting her so young to help me make it through, besides Nutrical, i'll be getting plenty of that stuff.

Also, how do you switch a puppy from their puppy food that the breeder sends with you, to your own food? This one's not as easy as the *mix it in slowly* because i'm going to feed homemade food with minerals and nutrients in it, works great for my aunt Karrie and Bailey. but i'm wondering how to change it up from Diamond puppy food, which will be hard kibble, to soft and squishy

If I remember correctly, she'll be 6 weeks? Becky K is a member here who recently brought home her baby Lily Kisses at 6 weeks. Perhaps if you contact her, she can help out with what you'll need.

really, Missouri is the puppy mill state? wow!! that's where i live, that's sad, well at least i can be sure this isn't a puppy mill, he might be a backyard breeder and a little uneducated and not super professional, but this guy's trying, he really loves his puppies and i think he just wants to make people happy, even if they aren't always the best parents and even if this breeder doesn't seem to know the "better" way to raise puppies, i really think he's just a simple old feller, trying to make people smile by giving them a puppy that he raised in his home and loved and he's too darn nice to charge them lots of money...i dunno i might be way off, but i can't help but feel like i'm right about this guy...

he has nothing to gain really by selling me a pup for so cheap and cheating me, i'd take him to court if the vets tell me she's sick right off the bat, and he wasn't willing to give me my money back...speaking of which, i am taking her to the vet the first chance i get...and i'm going to make him do a vet check too!! he was more than happy to!!

and i don't know if i told you this, but the pup is registered with APRI (what's the difference between APRI and AKC anybody??) and Marvin's wife Linda (so sweet on the phone) she says they've been having a vet come out and check things over and they're getting licensed soon, (what does licensing in MO require)??

Thanks to those who will help answer these questions!!

APRI is the worst registry there is! that is especially for the puppymillers!! This is what my dog was registered with before I knew and was tricked :( Wow I really wish you would take a step back and really consider what you may be getting yourself into, I know you want to save this puppy now but you think it's so simple to sue him after if theres lots of vet costs? No you cant because he isn't guaranteeing you anything! Its basically sold as is.

And when I spoke with the puppymillers who bred my dog they were EXTREMELY nice as well! but who cares how "nice" they are, they are doing something wrong and illegal! These guys were licensed in Missouri as well and it sure doesn't mean much since they were able to breed tons of yorkies and other breeds in kennels that were born with lots of issues and brought lots of heartache for CHEAP! as well!

I am sure he's a nice elderly man but have his females and males
been tested for LP or other inherited genetic faults?
These are the things you have to worry about from breeder's like this
as well as pet store pups. You won't know until the problem arises then
it's too late. He probably doesn't know himself what the above are.
Take him to court, honey you don't have money for a more expensive
pup where are you going to get $ to fight him in city hall?
It's your choice just wanted to cover all the basis with you.
Good luck,

What would be your defintion of a puppy mill? Most warning signs of a puppy mill are :
keeping dogs in a kennel, seperates mother from litter before 8 weeks, breeds on every heat, breeding more than 2 breeds.
Remember these monsters dont have horns they look like everyone else and e are friendly and outgoing but it doesnt make what their doing right.
Your 400 dollar puppy may be more than likely costing you thousands in the long run.

And....even if there is a happy ending, everytime someone buys from one of these places they are supporting it and the culture.

I do think it is best to wait to get the pup at 10-12 weeks however I got mine at 6 and 8 weeks. They havent had any health problems and besides barking they are well behaved. I just wanted to give you a little encouragement that sometimes it works out okay. I do understand everyone concerns though and dont think they are bashing you they just want you to make the best decision you can. Good luck

RachelandSadie 07-27-2009 12:24 PM

Not a puppy mill

to me there is a difference between a puppy mill, where hundreds or even thousands of pups are in metal cages living in their own crap and being mistreated, underfed, and not loved

and a backyard or "hobby" breeder, who has only a few dogs, keeps the soon to be moms in the house nearby, and plays with all his puppies daily running around in the yard/house with them and loving on them, bathing them, and talking sweetly to them.

The guy may not be the best breeder in the world, and he may not have all the right ideas down about raising pups, but he's not running a puppy mill.

I will agree that he's a backyard breeder, and that he probably should do things differently, but we're going to trust it this time and see how it goes, if we get screwed, you can all say a big fat "I told you so" and i'll feel like a complete dunce, but let's all hope for Sadie's sake, and mine, that everything works out great, she's healthy and wonderful, and i have the experience of owning and loving a yorkie and making this the best thing to come into my life.

On that note, i'm going to retire from this thread, other than to ask more "How To" questions.

Feel free to offer any advice on raising puppies and other things like that!!

Your happiness in getting a new puppy isn't what is most important here. The health and well being of that puppy is. To purposely make the wrong decision is irresponsible. I hope that you have a Savings account with a few thousand dollars in it for the care of your puppy. I told you that I got my Yorkie at 7 weeks of age. Within the first 2 months of owning her, I had to fork out $6000 in vet costs, immunizations, and her spay. Being a responsible pet owner is alot more than just enjoying raising a puppy. Getting a puppy at such an early age is just setting yourself up for problems.

But hey, we've all done what we can to help you with your decision by sharing our information and experiences with you. If I were you, I'd reconsider your decision and we can all help you find a puppy from a reputable breeder. :)

OMG:eek: You have got to be kidding. I feel so sorry for all those pups and the breeder dogs. They are probably in a cage all day long without her pups. How sad. I would not give this person a dime.
