Whining Yorkie!! Is that common?? My yorkie is one year old and from the time I have had him since he was 5 months old, he whines whenever he wants something. One time, he whined as long as 45 minutes straight when I had placed him in his crate for the night. His crate is in my bedroom so he was not alone. I knew he was fine, because he had just finish with the potty. Is whining a common trait for yorkies??? I have a seven year old yorkie who I adopted as an adult...she is the total opposite, so quiet I have to remind myself not to leave her in the car. Before getting the puppy my first yorkie went everyplace with me...to restaurants, libraries, stores etc. she was so quiet in her carrier bag that people did not even know she was there. The bag looks like a purse so no one even suspected otherwise. Do you have a whiner? Is it somthing they will outgrow?? |
Mouthy Yorkie My 1 yrs. old male is very vocal and whinny. I have a terrible time some times trying to figure out what he wants. Mostly, he wants to be played with. He does not like to be petted or held. I wish he did. |
My Bailey whines whenever I leave the room for a minute! Also if I am doing something..like watching a tv progam or on the computer, he whines until I pay attention to him..and only him! |
Roxie is my mouthy girl! She will whine or I think that it sounds more like a piggy squealing when she has to go potty after she slept all night and then when we are going away she starts getting all crazy and squealing all over! LOL:rolleyes: |

But anways, Baxter is nine months old and he usuall doesn't whine much, but he does bark when he wants something. Not sure if the whining will be something he grows out of though, especially if he is already one years old. |
I have a whiner. Harley whines if I am watching TV or on my computer. He will lay right beside me and whine the whole time. The only time he stops whining is if I pet him. He is all about the undivided attention. |
I also have a puppy that is a whiner. Her name is Anastasia! She is 10 months old now and still whines. She doesn't whine when in her crate or in our bed. In fact she is a very well adjusted puppy. She was an only child and spoiled. She whines when I leave her site or when I am fixing her breakfast or cooking or sewing in general just anything other than giving her attention. We love her and would not trade her for anything. She is a very special part of our lives! |
Just like with kids, a lot of dogs whine because it works. Be careful about giving into whining, because that just teaches the dog to do it more. Be especially careful not to give in after 10 minutes, because that just tells them they need to whine extra long to get what they want. That being said, if my dog whined for 45 minutes, I would be concerned that he was in real distress. |
Its very common. It all corresponds with their personality...Some are just very vocal. Teddy is a big whiner...the other day i was sitting and he just came over to me, sat down and stared at me and started whining and would not stop! lol he wanted me to take him to the dog park.. |

Uni whines all the time when she wants attention, wants to play, wants to go outside, but if it's not time for that, she doesn't get it. She knows this and after a bit of whining, she quits and goes in the corner to pout. |
Lucy used to bark whenever she wanted something - infinitely more annoying than whining! We taught her to 'talk' to us instead (and some of her 'words' are quite whiney), but it's pretty much cut out the barking. She has developed a whole range of different noises - whines, whimpers, grumbles, huffs, murmurs - and we're beginning to understand what she means each time, and be able to respond appropriately. Most of her 'chat' seems to be about wanting to play or cuddle - ANY kind of attention, in fact (she uses the same 'vocabulary' now when talking to the cat, although he definitely doesn't speak her language!) Life is quieter now, as she only barks properly if we have an 'intruder' - like the postman or a caller at the door - so I'm really glad that she 'talks' now. |
Wrigley is 3 and she's a whiner! She can make the funniest whining noises, she sounds like a child! She's not a barker, which is funny, but she will whine for something she wants! |
Jemma does her thing by using grunts like a pig or what sounds at times like a low gorwl. But at different sound levels. Only 2 reasons that she does this. One, I'm on the computer and she wants to be picked up. Two when she does a poopy she whines to tell me she did it. Why? Because she knows she gets a treat when she does poopy on the pad. She doesn't feel like waiting until I find it. She wants her treat NOW! |
My Keegan, at almost 8, is still a whiner. He does it when he wants something...little short whines & when I get up he shows me what he wants. He's a very smart little guy. |
Addie "fusses" when she wants something or she wants attention. She has this low growl with different sounds that she does, it's really funny. She'll fuss when I'm on the computer or doing anything that means she can't have full access to me. She also fusses when we are standing and she wants to be picked up, I think she likes to be level with us. My boyfriend will let her fuss and fuss sometimes because he thinks it's so funny and I'll have to fuss at him in return to pick her up. LOL!! They do it because they are spoiled and used to getting all the attention and they know by whining, fussing or barking they will usually get what they want. Thankfully, Addie doesn't bark unless she hears a noise that she's not familiar with or if she hears someone at the door. But, she always knows when it's her daddy or when it's someone else, she's very smart! She also barks if she's sleeping and a noise wakes her up, but her bark is not loud and really cute. |
I have one (lexi) that is a barker... she like TALKS. And then the other (prada) that is the whiner... she will wine in her crate... in her car seat... on my lap. NO CLUE why! ROFL |
Sugar is a whiner too...she gets progressivly louder until I pick her up  |
That's one thing I've learned, don't give in to the whines! I find Bailey will eventually stop and go on to something else if I can't tend to his "needs" at that very moment :) My bf's sister has a yorkie and we babysat a few times, her yorkie whined for her the entire time she was gone! I'm hoping Bailey doesn't turn out like that:rolleyes: |
Sebastian and Autumn are whiners. If I am in view they will whine for me. Autumn was being held by my niece in the car and she whined all the way home. Not constant every now and then and it was a low sounding whine. Sebastian will bark scream and whine if I leave him in the car with my hubby. If I have to make a pitstop. I tell hubby to hold him and he says nothing works! Telling him to hush or even holding him. After the first couple of times he says anytime we go somewhere with him I have to take my doggie purse. I am not leaving either of the two alone with him. LOL!:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
