When does the barking stage start..... and how to prevent it??? Baxter is 11 weeks and only a couple of time has a bark came out of him. (my husbands biggest fear).... the few barks have come during his chasing our cat under the bed and his frustration that she won't come out. I would like my best to "prevent" the barking IF POSSIBLE ... your all probably laughing at this point! I read to squirt him with water to stop it.... and I'm already armed with a squirt gun ready to fire, but haven't gotten to use it yet (this sounds sooooo wrong - ready to fire!). Thanks All!!!! |
Tobie only really barks when he hears a strange noise at night or if someone comes to the door but as soon as I open it he stops so his barking doesn't really bother me. I'm not really sure if there is anything you can do to keep them from barking at all... maybe someone else will be more help. As far as the spray bottle, we tried doing that with Tobie when he messed with the other dogs and it didn't phase him one bit. LOL. I think he just thought it was a game. |
I can't remember when Ellie's problem barking started, but she did try to bark at someone while trying to protect me at about eight-weeks-old. In my opinion, it is too early for a spray bottle. You never know, maybe just a "quiet" will work with him. I say start as nicely as possible. If he has only barked a few times, I don't think there is much reason to stop him because he has to be allowed to do it sometimes. Have you been teaching the "speech" command? If he knows how to do that, then you can teach "shhh" or "quiet". |
Mine started barking at 4 mos old and havent stopped. Coins in a can helps distract them |
Mine all started barking around 4-5 months. Now they bark at the wind.:D Mary |
My girls started barking it seems as soon as I brought them home. Mainly yapping. Then Sebastian didn't start till he was about 7 or 8 months old. I took him to my son's football game and when they rushed the field towards us he got up and ran right at them barking. I was like OMG! he has a voice. Now all he does is whine when he wants his mummy.:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
When you find the answer to stop barking, let me know. Smokey is driving me bananas! |
I was worried about this too, but then I realized that barking is in a dogs nature. They bark to let you know there is an intruder, to go out, to eat, and maybe when they are in hot pursuit of the cat ;) I then realize that I didn't want to stop the barking period, but only the unnecesary barking. (Like staring at a wall barking lol) So that ends my story and I am up for any advice too! |
One thing that helps is if you can tell your dog is barking just because, they might have too much pent up energy. If Smokey starts in one of his barking fits it's because he has too much energy and wants to play, so I usually just take him outside to run to stop myself from reaching for the duct tape lol :D |
Mine only barks if she's startled, she whines though. Especially when we are going for a walk and there are lots of people or dogs she wants to say hello to. Definitely loves attention. |
Mine never really bark, but maddie growls if she wants up or to go outside to potty, I think that it is adorable, and copper makes all kind of silly noises that I call talking he is so funny sometimes. I had not heard either bark at all until they were like 5months old or more. Some are more vocal than others. |
Welcome to YT:) All dogs bark but some a little less and the yorkie isn't one of them. ;) I think Ellie Mae is right that your pup is way too young for a water bottle. My girl only barked to alert me and if some one was at the door. She saved my life once alerting me to smoke in our apartment building. I kept saying shhhh that's ok Crystal and she would not stop and sure enough the fire men were in the hall and told us not to open the door and to put something under the door to keep the smoke from coming in that night. She seemed so proud of herself. There job in life it seems is checking the door and protecting us. Good Luck with your little one, I'm sure Baxter will be fine. Do post pictures when you have a chance. |
I just got 2 yr old Niyah this passed weekend and I am proud to say that she is not a barker. In fact, I have yet to hear her bark. I am thankful. Her previous owner raised her right. Whenever she hears any sounds, she only perks her ears up and goes running to find the sound. I much prefer this than barking. I have been blessed with her in everyway so if you read me talking about her so much, you will know just how proud I am of her. Even my sammy does not bark except when the kids play with her. I had a sammy a long time ago that would bark a lot. She would bark to get in the house after being let out to potty. |
