Advice on adding a new yorkie to the family? We are thrilled to be adopting a rehome very soon - an adorable little 2 y/o boy (who is neutered and gets along well with other dogs). We have had our Bella for 4 months- we adopted her at approximately 2 y/o. She is very mellow, gets along with other little dogs, and we've never seen any possessiveness (and she is spayed). I was just hoping to hear any advice about how to best introduce them to each other and how to make this transition easier and better for both of them. I really hope they become great little companions and will love having each other once everyone settles in. If anyone has any tips or advice, we would be so appreciative! |
Congratulations. I have added 4 puppies/dogs in the past 4 years to an only dog household. Each time I just brought the new addition home and let them get to know each other. The would just sniff the new one and get excited then they all settled down. I never left the new one loose with the rest until I knew they were all fine with each other and besides I crated the newest one for potty training reasons. I left the others in the same room as the crate and they would lay by it. Just make sure to give Bella extra attention. Hopefully they will get along great. Mine snuggle together and play/fight. I think they really like having canine companionship. |
Congratulations! I hope that everything goes well for you! |
The best way to introduce them is to take them for a walk. A good long walk to tire them out. When they are tired, simply walk them into the house. Walking together is something that dogs only do with their friends and family, so by walking them together, they will more easily accept each other. Also, tired dogs are happy dogs, so you are guaranteed that there won't be any weird vibes. They won't have the energy for issues! Good luck and congratulations with your new baby! |
I would make sure they meet in a "neutral" area. Even if it is just across the street... |
Thank you so much for all the tips! I really like the idea to have them meet outside and then we'll do a long walk in the neighborhood before coming inside. The idea to keep the new little guy somewhat confined when I can't supervise and observe them interacting at first is also good. I've really got my fingers crossed that they will grow to love each other! Luckily I've got my DH to help out with our new little guy so I'll be able to continue giving lots of attention to my little princess Bella. It's so cute- DH is the one who actually brought up the idea of adding another to our little family. He saw this one's picture and was like- "that's the one." He still won't admit that he's a yorkie lover to his friends, but he's totally hooked ;) |
I can't wait to see pics and hear how it goes. |
I'll definitely update you and post pictures. I just need to speak with the previous owner's vet to be sure there's no medical issues I don't know about and then I get to go pick him up on Wednesday!!!! I am SO excited! :D |
disappointed and sad Well- I have sad news. I won't be adopting this Wednesday after all :( The agreement I had with the previous owner was that I would be able to speak with the little boy's vet before I flew up to pick him up. She told me he was healthy and that she just wanted to take him in for his check up before I called and then over the past two weeks there have been a variety of reasons I've been given for putting off this contact. I kept giving her the benefit of the doubt that stuff happens, but now it's almost 24 hrs before my flight and she won't return my calls, texts, or emails and still won't even tell me the vets name. I'm going to call the airlines and see if I'll be able to get any of the flight money back- probably not at this point. It's not even the cost or the flight that makes me so sad- it's that we were so excited to add this little guy to our family and now it's not going to happen. I just can't feel good about buying a dog that the previous owner won't let me speak to his vet- I want to know what medical issues if any I will be responsible for taking care of right off the bat before I make a commitment for the lifetime of the dog. Especially since it seems there is some reason she doesn't want me to talk to the vet. It wouldn't be fair to Bella, my DH, or to me for that matter. I'm sorry for going on about this for so long- I'm just so disappointed. I feel like crying- which I guess is stupid since I never even met the little guy. Thanks for listening. |
I ma so sorry it didn't work out, but it is for the best. How about looking into a rescue group to adopt? A good rescue has the dogs completed vetted, evaluated for what the ideal home will be and works on housebreaking and other training in foster care. There are no surprises and you will get a Yorkie that is perfectly suited to your family. |

Twist to the story... Ok, so much has happened in the last 3 days. But to make a long story short-ish... The previous owner finally contacted me with the vet information (literally texted me while I was on the phone waiting to speak to someone at the airline to change my flight). I called and got records faxed to me and after a conversation withe the previous owner (she was very apologetic) decided to continue with a leap of faith and fly up there yesterday. LOL- I woke up needing to make a 2.5 hr drive to airport to find my car battery had died!!! Luckily DH got it started adn let me take his truck to the airport- I barely made the flight. I got my new little guy and we had a safe flight/drive home. We took Bella and our new guy (DH wants to rename him) for a long walk last night and then brought them inside. They seem to love each other already, but I'm still going to separate them while I am at work till I can observe them a bit more. He's very cute- needs to gain a bit of weight and due for a trip to the groomers, but so so sweet. I'll add a picture later today- it's just crazy around here with the 2 of them running and playing. |
I'm so glad that the two of them are getting along so well! Congratulations! |
Thanks. I can't wait for it to be 11:30 so I can go home to them for lunch!!!! |
congratulations! post some pics =) |
