Yorkie Childhood Stages?
 

We are enjoying our Yorkie puppy so very much. We are both retired and have plenty of tiime to spend. She has developed some behaviors we were wondering if they are breed/dog related. She is our FIRST dog, we have always been cat people. Are these expected?
1. After peeing she rubs her feet backwards back and forth?
2. She can chew for a half hour on a chew toy without stopping?
3. She does 3 one mile walks a day.
4. She takes food out of her bowl and hides 2-5 pieces of it around the house?
5. She loves to sleep on our shoulders, curled up in our neck.
6. She wants to be outside all the time.

What other behaviors are other puppies doing? Like I said, we are NEW dog owners and are curious about what to expect.

Puppies have so many cute stages. I have one that takes on piece of food at a time out of his bowl and goes off to chew it. They love to chew and rawhides are great to save your shoes. One loves to sleep on the back of the couch and keep a look out to the back yard, he is our watchdog.

I love all the stuff they do to keep me smiling.............

our little one takes her kibble out of her bowl and then goes off to chew it and then back to the bowl...constantly until she finished her meal. As for chewing....we gave her nylabone chew teething rings and for hours she would chew it...especially when teething.

My little Mia is 5 months old. She weighs 4 lbs and has short little legs. Her new thing is to run and JUMP in the bath tub (empty of course). It is
sooooo funny to see this little tiny dog jump so high. I started leaving the toilet lid down because I am afraid she will try to jump in there. I didn't know they could jump like this. She thinks it is a game.:rolleyes:

Each dog is, of course, different with what is 'normal' for them. But what you have listed is quite common for any dog, not just Yorkies. I have two big dogs that both scratch backwards after going potty along with my Yorkie. To be honest, I'm not sure why they do this, but it's funny you ask because I was just wondering this yesterday!
Isla will crawl up on my neck occasionally now but did it more frequently when she was younger. It must be a comfort thing.
She will also take food from her dish and eat it away especially if it's too big and she needs to chew on it a bit longer (we feed raw food so the pieces are usually larger than kibble).
Chewing is a dogs way to exercise teeth, gums, neck and jaw muscles, etc. It is a normal activity that they continue their whole lives. However, expect it to get worse around the 5-6 month mark as they start to teethe and get their adult teeth. Just like human babies need to mouth things, dogs too have this at this time. You may get frustrated because anything on the floor (shoes, cords, table legs) is game to them. They don't understand that it's off-limits until you tell them. Don't get angry at her, just say 'no' firmly and give her something appropriate to chew on. She'll catch on and start to know what her things are. But this can be a long road! Isla is 1 year and she sometimes still will chew on the kid's toys if they leave them on the floor.
You might want to get a puppy book, too, for the typical puppy behaviors and stages they go through the first year.

Thanks to all of you that have taken the time to reply. I am loving almost every minute of being a new puppy mom. Sometimes it is hard to "love it" when she needs to go potty at 6:00 a.m. and it's raining out. But I am proud of her for being potty trained so easily.
Keep those anecdotes coming about Yorkies. It's so much fun to hear what puppies/dogs do.

Stella does that too, even if I tear up a training treat into a rice-sized piece, she still goes off to her bed to eat it; she acts like every piece of food is an obstacle! Sometimes she won't eat her kibble because she's waiting for something more interesting. So I play her game and scatter her kibble down the hallway and tell her to "go find it." When I do that, she'll eat every last piece because then it's a game.

Since she's hit the 5 month mark, she's starting to get curious about noises outside, even though she might be scared of the same noises when we're walking outside, she gets curious when she hears the mailman opening the mailbox outside our door, or when she hears a car drive by. Lately, she's figured out how to jump up on her daddy's recliner so she can see over the bushes outside our patio door (he wasn't happy about it at first, but he's over it because she's too cute when she does it).

Yes dogs love to chew! When Uni was teething, we would find pieces of drywall peeled off the walls. It was like a game of how big a piece she could get off. She chewed on the bullnose corners in the house until the metal underneath was exposed. Chewed up the base boards. Luckily she never got sick from eating the house.

She also curls up on our laps all the time into a tiny little ball. But when it's bedtime and we are in bed (she sleeps with us) she always wants to be totally sprawled out, arms up above her head, legs completely straight, and laying crosswise on the bed! She takes up all the room on our king size bed! Also, if I turn in bed from one side to another, as soon as I turn she will steal my pillow. Or she will sleep between my knees and I won't be able to move b/c I don't want to disturb her.

I was told that the rubbing of feet after a bowel movements was to release a scent from a gland. Something else for other dogs to smell.
