New to Yorkie Forum and Yorkie as pet Hi I am so new that we haven't even gotten our puppy yet. We have a female yorkie. At nine weeks she is 1lb 4oz. I am joining because I am a new dog owner and I am really worried that our family takes care of her correctly because she is so small. I am most interested in tips regarding her diet and grooming. I have decided on a crate for her sleeping and a harness to use for her to go on walk. I want us to get off to a good start. Please any advice. |
Welcome to YT!!!:wavey: You will learn so much here:thumbup: Very nice people with lots of good info. Sounds like you are very concerned about your new furbaby:thumbup: I feed mine Taste of the Wild all stages. Check out the health and diet forum:) A crate for sleeping is a great idea, a harness is a must! Keep us posted and we love pics:p |
Great start... Great start by coming here. Read as much as you can. The most important thing is to be patient. These little yorkies are very sensitive yet very tough. You definitely have to be alpha but make sure not to scare them when they are puppies (or anytime for that matter) because you can do a lot of psychological damage. One thing I have noticed that has caused problems is that people think my dog is so cute, they pick her up when they see her. That is not good. She is very nervous when she greets people. Are they going to pick her up or not? They say that you should ask people to pet her but not pick her up. It is very scary for a tiny dog to be picked up by strangers. Definitely take her to a lot of different places to meet a lot of different people while she is very young. Be patient and consistent with potty training. Penny goes outside for potty but it took almost a year for her to not potty inside. This is because their bladder is so small and not fully developed. They have to go out often. We took her out every hour during the day and rewarded her every time she peed. We also used a playpen for times when we could not watch her 100%. She was fine at night...would sleep in her crate. It is definitely a good thing to crate train your new puppy. You will be so happy you did. Don't give in!! Read as many books as you can regarding YORKIE puppy training before you get the puppy and read as much advise on this forum as you can. You will be rewarded with a good dog in the end. Expect to feel overwhelmed and frustrated at times. But it will pass. Come here to chat or call a trainer...but don't give up or get upset with the puppy. It is a lot of work....but I am so happy with Penny. She is one of the smartest dogs I have ever owned. Good luck and hope this helps. |

Welcome to YT. I too am a new Yorkie mom and never owned a dog before so this site has helped alot. The big thing I learned was the food. I was feeding my Coco Iams because I thought that was a good food, well I guess it's crap:eek:. I also feed mine Taste of the Wild now.I bought it at a feed store. She has done great on it. These babies are so much fun. Coco also loves apples and carrots. Another trick I would suggest for you is when I first got her she didn't want to eat. I was freaking out about her having a low blood sugar problem if she didn't eat. My friend suggested honey nut cherrios. Worked like a charm. They are still her favorite trainning treat. So if your pup won't eat and you are worried about her blood sugar try the cherrios to ease your mind. She just needs to get used to your home. Good luck, can't wait to see pics. I am in FL also and I don't let mine out in the heat too much. Right now I let her on the cool deck around 7am for maybe 30min while its still cooler. They can dehydrate quickly. Have fun:D |
