How much of a workout? How much of a workout does your Yorkie get? I'm a little worried that Chewy is putting on a little weight (all the treats that go with his training!). I don't want to slack off on training, he barely touches his food...so I'm thinking it must be a matter of excercise. We go on at least one walk every day, sometimes more. A half mile is average for his daily basic walk, but he runs all over the place on his flexi lead as we go and it usually takes an hour. He gets additional walks on weekends and every few days, which are much much longer. Today we went to the park and ran-ran-ran as he chased other dogs and practiced walking nice on a leash for two hours. The we play inside all the time. Tug, go get it...hide and seek... So, uh...How much excercise does a Yorkie need? I've lost 30 pounds! |
I've read (in several books and website) that a yorkie really needs only about 15 minutes of pure exercise a day. So based on that, it seems your puppy is getting plenty! I have also heard that whatever you are giving in treats (for training) you can eliminate that portion when feeding. So maybe it's not the lack of excerise but the amount you are feeding him. I was also told that the size of the treat for training, really does not have to be very big. Just morsels, to avoid over feeding and weight gain. Just things to think about. You could be doing all the above correctly. Have you actually weighed your puppy? is he heavier than he needs to be for his height/age/stature? |

Usually two small bowls of dry chow per day...this is for a 16-17 pound active yorkie. When treat-training, he ignores his food when full. For example, yesterday's breakfast is still there. So I don't think he's over eating...but he was said to be at his perfect wieght for his body on his last vet visit, and I think he's definately filled in around the middle since then. I haven't wieghed him to make sure...But was just wondering how much excercise this guy needs! |
