Dog Licenses??? Anyone out there help me out about this? I live in Orange county, CA. Is a license required by law, and is there a limit on how many dogs can be in one household? I believe, no I KNOW, there is a snitch in the neighborhood. He is calling up anyone and everyone trying to get us fined for anything. (Haters!) Today a guy came to the house and banged on the door really hard (to get any dogs barking) and Uni was home today and started barking like mad. The two other dogs outside did not bark for some reason, and they always do. The guy says that we have to pay a fee for each dog, $100 for un-neutered, and $24 for neutered per year. He only wrote down one yorkshire terrier, he did not come into the house to see the other two out back. Why haven't I ever heard anything about this? Is this for real? My bf watched him as he went to every single house in the neighborhood, b/c he thought he was only coming to our house. Can we say that Uni doesn't live there? Technically we are still registered as living in riverside county. Any help would be much appreciated. |
I live in a small town in Connecticut and we are suppose to license any dog over 6 months old. We pay $10 for spayed or neutered and $30 for un- neutered. You have to show proof of spay or neutered and also show a Rabies certificate. If you have a kennel it is a set fee for the kennel no matter how many dogs you own. This is a yearly fee. |
I've had Uni for two years and the other dogs have been there for many many years as well. Why hasn't anyone ever said anything to us before? Doesn't $100 seem like a ridiculous amount? |
Holy Cow! $100.! We pay 12 for a un-neutered dog and $6 for a neutered one. I would call the town hall. Find out what registration is, he may be doing some kind of scam. That sounds like a terrible amount. Good Luck |
It does seem like a lot. We have to pay for our licenses every year but they are $25 for dogs that arent spayed/neutered and $12 for those that are. Good luck, how long did he give you guys too? I know out by my parents some people have been given time limits and they come back around to check for that too. I also know that you could be fined extra (not sure how much) but for being late on registration. |
Well I am at work, and bf called to tell me what his mother said. She always overexaggerates and gets info all mixed up, so maybe this could be a case of playing telephone? I just wonder why we have NEVER heard anything about this before. I mean of course I have "heard" of dog licenses, but no one has actually said anything to us. I haven't seen the paperwork, so i don't know if it is legit from the county or a scam. |
Ok i found this from another member on another thread, if anyone has the same ??? as me: Bchgirl (thank you): "Here you must have a kennel license if you own more than 5. Previously someone had to report you for anyone to come to your house....now the vets' offices are required to send info to the city when your dog gets their rabies shot." So I called my vet's office, and yes they send info to the city after a rabies shot. And yes it is $100 (!!!) for an un-s/n dog, and $24 for a s/n dog. We have until this thursday to pay! My question is, why was he going to every single house in the neighborhood? So now b/c of me maybe some other dogs are going to get "found out" about? They didn't know we had two more in the back! also un-neutered! |
I've heard your suppose to have a license, and when the vet gives a rabies shot, he's suppose to report it to the city. We never had any problems until someone reported us. Luckily halfe the dogs were in the backyard, or we would have been hit with a big fine. Our vet never did report when he gave a rabie shot so I know it wasn't him. Just guess it was somebody who didn't like us. |
$100 is absolutely rididculous. It is just an attempt to make s/n mandatory. It isn't nearly that much here...wow. I didn't know some vets fax rabies records. How silly. |
California and all of its counties are hurting for money and trying to exploit every avenue to nickle and dime California residents. If this is true it just goes to show you how desperate they are. Personally I would ignore the citation--just because the dog was there doesnt mean that you own it. edited to add: that certain counties in CA are required by law to report all rabies vaccinations back to the county so that they can cross-reference it with the licensing information and site those who are not in compliance. This is the reason so many vaccinate in other counties. |
Some would show up again each year you don't renew once you've started licensing your dog with the city. On occassion, they may overlook you for one or half a year of non-renewal, but be sure they'll be back... in some municipalities. |

Needless to say, he gave me one week to get my dog licensed. Well, cuz of my work hours, i couldnt get to the shelter because they would be closed by the time i was off work and they were closed on my day off. Well, a week later animal control came knocking on my door to check. I told them my situation and he did not care and he gave me a $200 ticket!!!! the license would of only cost $20 a year!!!! ughhh... my point is u should get them licensed asap so u dont go thru what i went thru..... The funny thing was when animal control came, i had 2 dogs at the time and he saw both of them but he only asked for the license for my jr. Maybe cuz the jr was the one that was being reported???? Anywho, im not sure if this helps or answers your question at all LOL!!!!!! I was told the max amount of dogs per household in oc is 3. (not sure tho) Good Luck! |
O i forgot to mention, yes its the law to have your dog licensed in oc county is what i was told by the animal control officer... |
Thanks for all your replys. Yes I totally agree with Bravo916, CA is fining every little thing they can b/c the state has no money. You know what? Neither do I! This guy is actually only giving us until Thursday to pay up. I really hope this is something I can drop off payment, and not have him come back b/c there are two more dogs out back. We are still listed as riverside county residents, but Uni's vet paperwork says my anaheim address, where I have been living for the past year. Either way, she is not licensed at all in any county. Looks like I'm just gonna have to pony up the cash for this. |
In case anyone else is interested. I looked up some info on the OC animal care website. There is a 3 dog limit per house. By law, all dogs need to be licensed to indicate ownership, as well as if the pet is lost, they can contact you. As far as the license fee, I found a loophole. if your dog is an assistance dog, there is no charge for licensing. Anyone know how to get Uni certified? LOL |
100?? Wow, I'm sure glad I don't live in California. Here we pay $3.00 for a spayed/neutered dog, 6 if not. |
wow , we don't have dog licenses in England |
Go flippin figure...guess what I got in the mail today... Looks like I have to make another contribution to the California budget deficit (as if I already dont pay enough in taxes)... Licensing is $60/yr plus a "late" fee of $15. What irks me is all of this propaganda they include about how the purpose of licensing is to reunite lost pets with their owner--give me a break. That is what a microchip is for. Their "license" is no better than the $5 tag you buy at Petco and equally as ineffective. Instead of including all of this garbage about "reuniting lost pets" I would have more respect for them if they just came out and said the truth: that this is just another revenue-generating gimmick for the municipalities to fleece the responsible pet owners of California. Wow....I feel a lot better now that I've got that all off my chest!:D |
I think that it is wrong to make someone pay to have an animal. This is just a way for the city to dig more money out of people. Yes, the vets report them to the city. I found out the hard way. They started about a year ago here. I haven't paid it yet so I am not too worried about it until they get a little more aggressive about it. |
Yup I totally agree with you Bravo. Well said. And imagine I was complaining about the petco tags that cost $10. Ha! I know those don't work, I thought of them more as accessories for Uni's collar. |

California has one of the highest tax bases in the U.S., if not THE highest. Add to that, a lot of bleeding-heart do-gooders who want everyone to bear the cost of social and special interest programs for a few. Unfortunately, it doesn't surprise me that a city would charge $100 for an unaltered animal ... they have a big push to eliminate the need for all the hundreds of thousands of animals that get euthanized each year. I'm sure the fee would be less if the dog is neutered. Most counties/parishes in the U.S. require licensing for your pets. Yes, they try to sugar-coat it by saying it's a way to reunite you with a lost pet (and it is), but the funds are needed to pay for the facility where lost animals are taken in the first place. They need a building to shelter the animals; the building must be maintained and staffed. There is food, and bedding, and veterinary attention required. And if the animal is not reunited with its owner or adopted out, there is the matter of humane euthanasia. So who should be responsible for defraying the cost? Animal owners, of course. They are the direct beneficiaries of the facilities, such as they are. And how are these expenses defrayed? With the cost of licensing - a reward/penalty cost structure (less money for neutered animals, more for those who are not ... the ones responsible for the overpopulation in the first place). So I wish I didn't have the extra expense, but I understand it. I have to pay for my driver's license and my car tags, too - not so vastly different from paying for the privilege of having my beloved companions. |

Speaking from my personal experience I have never been a bebeficiary of the shelters services, low cost spay-neuter programs nor have I ever contributed to the animal overpopulation problem. I have the right to keep my pet intact and I control who he breeds to which when the time comes will only be to my breeders dogs and they will all be sold spayed/neutered and on very strict contracts. I find it very difficult to digest how I am responsible for the byb's and mills who create the pet overpopulation in the first place. |
Bravo, is your $60 a year fee for a kennel license or just for one dog? I am just wondering if it is just in OC that it is $100 per intact dog. I think I read somewhere else on here that in Riverside co it is $50 for an intact dog. We used to live there, coulda save $50! |
It is for one dog. I am not a breeder nor do I have a kennel--I'd hate to see how much that'd cost in these neck of the woods anyways. I wonder what AC would say if I told them I don't own his testicles--which is the truth. For all intents and purposes he is neutered lol. |
LOL, oh ok, I thought you were a breeder or a shower. Is that him in your avatar? Gorgeous! But I thought everything up north was more expensive than down here? I guess not huh? Oh no wait, you said he was neutered? So it is more up there then. |
I do show. I have one finished champion and a puppy who is on his way to becoming a ch. I am not a breeder though. I'd background check people first so its better I stay away ;) |
Oh that's very cool. Oh, duh! I see your signature now. "Ch" Diesel. Way to go! |
