Barking during night due to noise
 
I have a boxer dog stays outside and has for some unknown reason started barking during the night. This has caused Harley (my Yorkie) to start barking too at 1, 2, 3 in the morning. He will continue to bark until me or my husband gets up and tells him to quiet down. Needless to say we are getting very little sleep. I have tried putting a fan next to Harley's crate hoping to drown out some of the outside noise but it hasn't helped. He can hear the barking over the fan. Does anyone have any suggestions? I really would like a full nights sleep.

Can you find out why the boxer is barking. I am sure if you have neighbors they would appreciate the boxer being quiet too. Perhaps you can get a large crate and bring the boxer in at night. I know the other night our neighbors dog started barking and barking in the middle of the night and it got my Gigi started barking. Needless to say I was not happy but luckily it does happen much.

My neighbors have a large dog who often barks in the middle of the night. If his deep barking doesn't wake me up first, my guys barking back to him will (mine are kept in my bedroom with me at night). I would LOVE to know what make this neighbor dog do this, so I could finally get some sound sleep!

My dog is barking at other dogs nearby barking. We have only lived in this neighborhood about a year and he did not start barking during the night until we moved there. In fact, its just been within the last couple of months that he has started doing this. I know there is one dog in our neighborhood that recently moved in that gets to roam the neighborhood but all of the other dogs are either inside or in fences.

I understand your frustration. It seems like a chain reaction happens when one dog barks then they all start barking. Is there a chance you could bring the boxer in the house at night?

Well...there is a little issue with that. Me and my son are highly allergic to him...didn't realize it until after we bought him. There is something about the short haired dogs. I break out in whelps and my sons eyes swell shut...its crazy. Needless to say the poor thing is totally outdoor dog and has been for 7 years. He is a sweetie but makes us miserable. My daughter and husband take care of him and have no problems. I just don't understand why he never heard dogs barking in our other neighborhood.

Does the boxer's barking bother you or just the yorkie that starts barking? If it is the yorkie barking then is there someplace you can move the yorkie to where he can't hear the other dog barking? Does the boxer bark every night or just when there is a full moon or just when other dogs bark? The only other option I can think of for the boxer is trying one of those no bark collars but I am not a big fan of those. Have you tried letting the yorkie sleep in bed with you? :) I bet he would love that.

My dog only barks when he hears other dogs barking. Well I tried letting Harley sleep with me last night....I figured if we couldn't hear the dogs barking outside then he wouldn't be able to either. He did great with the no barking but he could not get comfortable. He was pacing all night trying to find somewhere that he wanted to sleep. I was willing to let him get comfortable anywhere...he even laid across my neck and head a few times. I let him sleep with me before when it was storming outside (he was scared) and he did good that night so I don't know what was going on with him. If I keep trying this will he eventually be still and sleep? He had me up most of the night because he was pacing...so I still didn't get any sleep :)....I guess at least he wasn't barking so my kids were able to sleep.

Yes, I think he will get use to it. Does Harley get a lot of exercise during the day? Sometimes a lot of exercise and less sleep during the day will make them sleep better at night. I hope he starts sleeping better so you can sleep better. Keep us posted on how he is doing.

That may be one problem. My husband and I both work during the day so he is in a 52 inch round kennel during the day so he has plenty of room to be comfortable but he is not getting much exercise there. He goes for a short walk when we get home and another 2 walks before bed. Its so hot here right now that he can't stay out long. We were taking him for longer walks in the evenings during the spring. Around the same time we had to shorten the walks we had to start keeping him in a kennel during the day because he started chewing on stuff in the house. We were leaving him to roam during the day....so some of his exercise has been cut. I'll have to come up with some creative ways to get his exercise activity back up.

Does he like to play with toys, play ball or anything like that? I does sound like he is sleeping too much during the day. What about doggy day care? Are there any of them around where you live? Is your back yard fenced where he can go outside and play? I am sure you will work it out. I think you are on the right track.

I don't know of any doggy daycares around. I live in a really small town. Unfortunately my yard is not fenced in. I have tried letting him off of his leash to run around and he absolutely loves to run in the grass but it never fails he always goes straight for the road. If I could get he trained to stay within boundaries it would be great.
