Naughty Pup
 

Hi All,

This is my first time posting and hoping for some good advice :D.

My pup is just coming upto his 1st birthday and recently I think I have been spoiling him a little.

My main prob is that we were keeping him in the kitchen at nighttime and he was quite used to it no issues at all, however my girlfriend was sick recently and was off work for the week therefore we would leave him come up and sleep in the room at bottom of bed as the girlfriends didn't need to be up early for work.....but since the girlfriend has become well and back at work when we try to leave him in the kitchen at night he starts to cry and scratch at the door - He is relentless he will keep on doing it for as long as it takes to us surrendering in which we bring him up and he then sleeps no problem (obviously a comfort thing). The problem then is that my girlfriend can't sleep with him in the bed as she is a light sleeper and the pup tends to figgit.

So any ideas on how I can keep him in the kitchen in which he is calm and doesn't start banging and scratching the door ? Is it just leaving him get used to it ??

As the weather was good here in Ireland recently we left him in the garden as he has a dog house but he barks alot and the last thing we wont is problems with the neighbours:( - so we are keeping him inside but as above these are problem we have at night ?

I still wouldn't swap the world for him, but my girlfriend might if she dont get her sleep:D

Any tips would be great on how to tame the cheeky pup at night.

Welcome! Maybe you can move his crate into your bedroom and he can sleep by the side of the bed near you guys. That way you all get the sleep you need. Good Luck :)

Yes I was thinking of getting him a real comfy basket / bed at the weekend and placing it near our bed - tho in these cases you never win as he sounds like a tap dancer when he walks across the wooden floor in middle of the night as he is still young he likes to explore at bizarre times which the GF has moaned about - As you can see testing...Perhaps I could see if the GF might stay in the kitchen :D:D

I would make sure that your pup is exercised and worn out before bed. If he is alone during the day while you are away at work he might be sleeping too much during that time therefore he is not as tired at night. I would crate him at night so he can't wonder around or keep with your routine with the kitchen. But tucker him out before bed. Good luck!

Thanks Lazy Daisy - I take him for handy walks when we go home I will make sure he dont conk out until we go to bed and that might help too. I think all it will take is one night to break him into the kitchen routine and we should be ok again - I suppose if I was him and I had the comfort of the owners bed then back to the kitchen - I would also be protesting to get out - I suppose the fact he is young too he is fool of beans !

Please, oh please be very careful about leaving him outside unsupervised. I don't know how big he is, but they are very easy prey for wild animals. Very easy because they don't know to be afraid and will often not run when confronted. Here in Texas we have to be vigilant about coyotes, bobcats, hawks and owls. Even raccoons and opossums are a danger to these small dogs. I live in a big city area, Dallas, and I've seen all these wild animals and more walking in our neighborhood. Please just be very careful, it would be a horrible way to lose your baby.

:thumbup: it also gets cold at night and these babys get cold easily , I don't think Ireland weather is alot different to UK weather and theres no way Id leave Tia in the garden. I think cating is the way to go.:thumbup:

Not only wild animals but how about thieves?

At first I had problems with being too aware of my furbabies when they slept with us, but as time went on I have gotten very used to it and don't even notice when they get off the bed (via ramp) during the night. I have one that sleeps right up against me and it no longer bothers me. All but one of ours sleep with us and she prefers to sleep under the bed.:confused:

Try crating him in your room with one of your shirts or some article of clothing you have worn. He'll have your smell with him and feel more secure. I did this with one of mine when she was very young, my bed is very high, I gave her one of my fuzzy slippers that she just loved, and it worked like a charm. Please do not leave him outside. Yorkies are house pets, so much could go wrong in the night and you wouldn't even know for hours. It really isn't worth the risk. Good luck.

You said that he scratches at the kitchen door, do you close that door?

If so, no dog likes being behind a closed door. Put him in the kitchen but use a gate to close off the door. Also you can turn a radio on very low to keep him company.
