Very nervous for tomarrow's spay I would love some support. I made Maddie an appt to be spayed and it is tomarrow. I feel comfortable with the vet I am using. He does a 24hr emegency vet clinic and has been doing this for a very long time (he said he likes working on the tiny ones, and has done alot of 2lb puppies). But I am so nervous, Maddie is just a hair over 2 1/2 lbs and 9 months old now. We don't want to risk her ever being preg, and I have this whole week off of work so now is the best time to do it. He did say that he wants me to feed her an early morning meal because he wants her have a better chance of keeping her blood sugar up (she has never had a hypo problem this is just in case). He then will make sure she's had enough time to digest fully before the surgery. I haven't heard of anyone else doing this? But it sounds like this is what he normally does when he spays the smaller ones. To those of you that have had your babies spayed, especailly the ones that are more on the petite side, I would love to hear how well it went and anything else that I should know about. My babies are my world so the idea of putting them under scares me so bad, even my large breed dog made me nervous when she was under anesthesia I actually got to watch the same vet do an emergancy c-section on my big girl, Kalaya, 9 years ago and deliver 7 puppies with a birthweight ranging between 1-2lbs the biggest puppies he has ever seen:eek:. It was amazing he handed me my puppies and I cleared the airways and got them going. anyway I am nervous and now rambling. |
Good luck! I'm sure all be fine. Your vet sounds confident and knowing in what he is doing. But of course, I understand your worries! I was a nervous WRECK when Jackson was neutered and he is 14lbs (about 12lbs at the time of neuter!) Let us know how it goes! She will be back to her normal self in no time. |
Just want to send Maddie best wishes for her spay tomorrow. It sure sounds like the vet is a good one, having spayed the smaller ones in the past. That should put your mind at ease, somewhat. I know you won't feel better until it's over, I would be the sameway, hope tomorrow goes by fast for the two of you and it's over before you know it. Best wishes, |

Good luck tomorrow! I'm in the same boat as you, Bella weighs just under 2 1/2 lbs and she is due to get spayed next week. Let us know how she does. :) |

Thankyou, you are right, the idea of it being done and over with really makes me feel better. It is just getting to tomarrow. I had one breeder that told me that she doesn't want her puppy owners to tell her about the surgery until after it was over and they had done well, she said if she knows one of her babies are going under, she is upset and cries most of the day, I am understanding what she means about the anticipation being worse than the actual event. |

You are so lucky to have a vet that is experienced with spaying little dogs. Sending positive thoughts that everything goes smoothly tomorrow. Try to stay calm so that Maddie doesn't sense that you are so anxious. Please update as soon as you can tomorrow. |
I will pray for a safe spay and try and keep busy tomorrow to pass the time. I always have the vet call me as soon as surgery is over so I can relax. |
Hang in there! I, too, was super nervous when Ariel went to get spayed as she was so tiny in comparison to when my older dog dog got spayed at 6 lbs. Good luck and best wishes for tomorrow! |
Good luck tomorrow! Just a tip in case you haven't heard of it: have a baby's onesie (you probably need premie newborn for the size) on hand for your furbaby. If the wound bothers her, she will not be able to get at the stitches if you have a onesie on her. I have larger yorkies (Bailey was 7 pounds when she was spayed) & they got through their surgeries fine, but I ended up taking Bailey back to the vet a couple of times because she was picking at her wound & ended up developing a urinary tract infection - I wish I had known about the onesie sooner, so thought I'd throw that advice in here in case you hadn't heard of it. It sounds like you have a good relationship with your vet, so if you have any problems or concerns after the spay, be sure to let them know! |
Aww, we'll be going through that soon with Stella as well. Best of luck! My vet made reference to using the "laser" for the incision rather than a scalpel (sorry if that's too graphic), does anyone know if that actually reduces swelling/scarring/healing time like he says it does? |
I don't know anything about the laser, but I did just get Addie spayed a few weeks ago. She got her stitches out on the 10th. With Addie, I was told to stop giving her water and food at midnight the night before the surgery. But if you trust your vet, then I would think it's fine. I'm no expert, though. I was so nervous and scared that something would happen, but everything turned out great. I'm so thankful it's over. I'll be thinking of your baby! And good luck! |
Thankyou all, for the well wishes. It is nice to hear of the other babies that did so well. I will go and pick up a premie onsie while I am waiting to hear something tomarrow. My sister owns a children's consignment shop so she can help me pass the time and pick out onsies:) good idea. |
