Rehoming Age Hi. I am suppose to be getting a Yorkie puppy from a co worker (actually his in laws who live about 5 hours away) my co worker told me this mornign that my puppy will be coming home in a few weeks. I was suprised because they are only 3.5 weeks old and i thought that yorkies were suppose to stay with the mom and litter mates until at least 10 weeks of age. I said that to him and he said no we are getting him at 6 weeks. His inlaws are bringing all 4 of the puppies here at the same time to deliever them to the new homes so i can't tell them that i don't want my puppy until 10 weeks, they will give it to someone else and we already love our Sammy. Please any advice would be appercaited. Is it ok for us to take him into our home at 6 weeks of age? |
I would be concerned getting a puppy that young. Puppies are not usually completely weaned until they are at least 8 weeks old. How big are these puppies projected to be? How long of a trip will they have? Could you possible talk to the owners and explain your concerns and maybe they could keep all the puppies longer? |
You do not want a 6 week old! Yikes!! This is way too young. I keep my till they are 12 weeks old. They need that extra boost from mom and to be socialized more. They are terriers. Yorkies babies can also get hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) if taken away too young and due to stress. They can actually die from this. Sounds like they have no clue and do not want to have to deal with buying shots, vet check, or do poop patrol cleanup. I would put my foot down and say no, I will not take it at this age. Not unless you want to deal with a lot of problems and possible heartache. Have you not seen the parents or their home yet? |
It's not something I would choose to do, but, in your case, doesn't look like you have much of a choice. My first yorkie, JPop, was only 6 weeks (I didn't know any better). Just make sure he eats well, doesn't go hypo on you and just give lots of TLC. Have your vets number handy at all times. Please don't not get him because of this; it can be done. Lots of luck! :) |

I have the pack and play from when my son was a baby and i plan on using that, i also have a small carrier for him to put in there where i can leave the door open. I also have bought pee pads, toys and food and water dishes. I will not be able to take time off of work (i have the last week off of August and i was hoping that would be when he came home) but i live a mile from work and i get an hour for lunch so that should help. i'm just so worried that somethign will happen to him. |
Forgot to say Welcome to YT!! You'll find a wealth of info here! |
Sorry to say this but you are taking a risk, especially as you work. I got my first one at 7 wks and 1 lb. (didn't know any better) and she made it just fine however, I am sure it would have been a different story if I worked. Up every two hrs all night for first 6 wks. I couldn't do that and work. She is healthy and nearly one yr BUT....she has several behavioral issues that I doubt I would have had if she had stayed with her mom and sibs longer. I'm just saying what I wish someone had told me so you can make an informed decision. Good luck with whatever you decide. |
Hi there, and Welcome to YT ! Can you tell us why they are in such a rush to rehome the puppies at such a young age? Yorkies really are too small to leave their mother and litter mates until 12 weeks. They are not like other breeds . Please inform the owners this fact. Maybe they are not informed of this detail? yorkies are very small puppies and are risk of Hypoglcemia , and also need time to socialize with their mother and littermates. If taken to early they lose out on this , which can cause behavioral problems for them when older. If you bring home such a young puppy you are risking the puppy all kinds of health problems, esp. Hypo. If you are not there to treat the pup , the puppy is going to die. Even after a week of being home, that is not going to be long enough for the puppy . It is going to depend on the weight of the puppy, if the puppy is able to eat on it's own, how well the puppy is eating on it's own . This is why the pup needs to be monitered. Please try talking to the people and not letting any of these puppies leave until older. |
