Yorkies and cold weather Hi Everyone! :D I'm just wondering if I can get some advice and input from other Yorkie owners who live in cold climates. At what temperatures do you need clothing for your Yorkie and what type of clothing do you use? Can you give me some good places to buy coats and sweaters and such? Do you still take your Yorkie outside to do his business in the rain/snow/cold? Or have you trained them to potty indoors exclusively, or both/either??? Here in Germany, even in July we have days where we wear long pants, long sleeves and a jacket, and the fall comes early and can be quite cold. The winter is long and snowy and rainy. I would just like to be prepared ahead of time! Thanks!! :) |

Your weather is quite similar to us here in England I believe. Most pet stores sell good quality coats being fur ones or rain macs , thats where I get Tias from.Like you say our weather can be unpredictable and just the other night I needed to put a t. shirt on Tia as it wasn't cold enough for the central heating to go on but she was chilly.I carry her coat in her bag every time we leave the house just incase the weather turns.I don't know how old your baby is but Tia is a year old and weighs 5lb so she does tend to feel the cold.I hope some of this is useful to you.:DIf you look at my avatar you can see her with her cosy jumper on lol |

bump I want to know this too |

I would say if you are cold, then they def need a coat or sweater. If you can't find any stores that carry them in Germany, there's always trusty old ebay. |

ditto. they also love to cuddle into blankets or afgans. blankets are necessasary at nite time so they don't get chilled. They also have PJ's for dogs. my 3# lil girl likes to sleep in t shirts and blankies. I am currently knitting a blankey for my little boy that is being rehomed. I want him to have a piece of his old family with him. You can buy baby blankets too. I personally have mine wee pad trained, so we don't have to worry about what the weather is. And they can go anytime they need to. Alot of ladies on here sell clothes, home made blankets etc. just look under Yorkie items for sale. Have fun shopping..... |

Here in Maine, it is not uncommon for the winter temperature to be -15 degrees. (we are close to the water also) With a damp raw wind. Baxter will usually wear a hoodie and a jacket or a sweater with the jacket. He will not wear boots. He is a tough little guy and absolutely loves the snow. |

Ok, I live in Northern Minnesota and we do have cold days in the winter. If the temp is above zero, Misty generally runs out on the deck, does her business then runs back in the house. She's out maybe 5 minutes. But when the temp drops below zero, I force her into her jacket. She hates it and would rather run out then run in without her jacket. But with her jacket she usually gets off the deck and runs in the snow for a few extra minutes then comes in and impatiently waits for me to take her jacket off. She's got blankets in the living room and on my bed to crawl into. |

When the snow is too deep we use a push broom on the lawn to make paths to their favorite potty spots. They are too cute, they just stand on the patio and wait for us to finish then they all take off in different directions to do their business. |

Ginger loves being outside, even when it's cold. She loves snow too. She will go out and play in the snow and come in looking like a big snowball. We have never put clothes on our dogs. They are basically inside dogs and we don't leave them outside for long periods of time. It gets darn cold here in the winter too. |

I live in Northern Alberta, Canada and my 2 babies love playing in the snow! We still go for walks everyday. I have winter coats and booties for mine. They still go outside to do their business and I don't usually put their coats on for that because they are only out for a few minutes. When I find it cold enough to wear a heavy sweater, that is when I start putting their sweaters on them too. As the weather gets colder, the sweaters turn into winter coats. I get most of my clothes from Petsmart but some I have order from Ebay. |

Hello! The winters in Illinois can be very cold. When it starts getting cold in the fall, I usually put a sweater on Abby. When it gets really cold in the winter, she gets a sweater and a coat. I also shovel the snow for her potty places though she does love to romp in the snow and comes in the house covered in snow. I keep a towel handy to wipe her feet off and then I blow dry her feet. I know, I'm crazy!!:) I just want to make sure her paws are nice and warm. |

I live in North Dakota where the weather can get down and stay below zero for days on end. My little troopers run out and come back in pretty fast when it is like that. I also, like the other gal said, make paths through the yard, my yard looks like a maze in the winter, but they DO need that space to get some exrcise. They HATE to be bothered with a coat. The long hair chihuahua has a nice coat and he's 14#. Mari (yorkie) 4# will let me put her jacket on if it is below zero. She has a full long coat, and sweaters mat her so I don't use them anymore. Angel, that is under 2# and has to be carried out, always wears a sweater in the winter and a T most of the year. She's so tiny that she needs the extra warmth. She just does her business quickly and I bring her back in. She is paper trained, so if it's too nasty she just stays in. I do like her to get some fresh air at least once a day though, no matter how cold it is. They all like their blankets and I tuck them in at night. The yorkies cuddle in them in the summer too. Bless their little furry hearts:love: |

Yorkies - cold weather I don't have to worry about cold weather as I live in Florida!!! I just read in a Yorkshire Terrier book that they are very sensitive to cold and if you have to take them out put "boots" on their paws as they are very sensitive. I hesitate to take mine for walks on the pavement as it gets really hot in summer with the 95 degrees plus weather. I touch the ground and if it feels hot to me he stays on the grass. Mine is wee wee pad trained indoors |

All my babies get cold easily but the two smaller ones really get cold. They start wearing sweaters in the fall and go right into the spring. This year there was a few summer days where they started to shiver and needed a sweatshirt. In the winter I often put a sweater and a coat on them. They all go outside when the weather is nice but only my bigger yorkie Jake (19lbs) will go out when it is real cold and he wears a jacket too. Everyone sleeps in p.j. and they all have their own blankets and cuddle cups at night. :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
