6 Month Old Yorkie Potty Training No Longer Working Hi - We have a 6 month old Yorkie that we brought home about a month and a half ago. We immediately began the crating process and worked great. We took him in 2 weeks ago to get neutered and then spent the 4th of July at the lake house and brought him along. When we returned home we discovered all of our "potty training" progress is no longer. He now eliminates where he pleases. We take him out quite often and he piddles, but when we get back in the house he then eliminates. This is getting so frustrating. We have resulted back to the crate. We do have potty pads around the house that he refuses to use as well, he use to use them. Can anyone give us any good advice or pointers? Jeff & Eve :aimeeyork |
Taking out (quite often) just isn't the trick. You have to have a schedule, and stick to it like clock work. With my Baxter, at first it was every 45 minutes!!!! When he could do that it graduated 15 minutes at a time. When I could trust him in the house for a hour, that is when he was allowed in the room with us. Other than that he was in the play pen. He was completely house trained by the time he was 5 or 6 months old. Asking to go out when he needed to. Good luck and keep up the good work |
This has been a complaint by many people here. It seems after they get fixed they resort to piddling everywhere. From what I know, you have to start over again but hopefully he'll catch on quicker. But give plenty of rewards. Ignore the accidents, no praise, but when he does it where he is suppose too, praise to the hilt. That means carrying little treats in your pocket and praising immediately. Connecting the treat to what he just did. They are frustrating little creatures aren't they?? |
It sounds like he has decided to reclaim/mark his territory since he was away for awhile. Unfortunately, even neutered dogs will do this. Had he started marking before his neuter? As Jemma said, treat it like a housetraining relapse and start all over again with Potty Training 101. |
Thank you everyone for your advice. Yes, we went back to doggie bootcamp by using the crate. We had a larger crate for him and he would go bonkers in it by barking and fussing. After reading more about crating we bought a crate fit for a 4lb dog and things are so much better. He does not fuss and bark much. We are on day 3 and no accidents yet. We are keeping a strict schedule. Starting over was not fun!!!! :0 |
