3lbs is very small. your correct> Our shih tzu pup is this weight as well and she is one little tiny fur ball . When smaller , I could not imangine breeding her:eek: That is cruel . They are headed for a world of trouble doing that to their poor little yorkie female. And then to insult you ! Just be assured you were in the right . |
I cannot stand when people say wow your yorkie is bigger than so and so's... Roxie is just under 6 lbs. and Ryder is about 7-8 lbs. either way there are smaller and there are larger yorkies- why does it matter? I am not a breeder but geez that does not sound right to me. |
Also wanted to add that some breeders breed a dog smaller than 5 lbs and there is nothing wrong with that but 2 lbs is way too small. I have heard that dogs bred smaller need c-sections. Is this correct? The smallest I have seen is 4 lbs and I think that is acceptable in my opinion. I just can't imagine a dog 2 lbs having a safe delivery but then again, I don't know. Never been in that position. |
IMO, breeding a 2 lbs dog is craziness... |
I spoke to the lady the other day about how its not safe to breed her OH SO TINY dog. . and all she kept saying to me was if the male is smaller it should be safe. She told me that they've tried (a few times) putting the male with her little 2pound female but they won't mate... I'm like OMG - even the poor male dog know its wrong to breed with such a small female. I told her to do some research online about breeding small dogs. So I'm really really hoping that she rethink this whole thing and get her baby spayed. :( I understand some breeders has bred some small dogs like 3.5 pounds but they are BREEDERS - most of the time they know what they are doing (or at least I hope they know what they are doing) unlike some people who just "breed" their dogs cause they want her to have puppies for whatever reason. |
I agree, she is way too tiny to breed. Maybe you could suggest to her to ask a veterinarian and/or read the breed guidelines on the AKC website. It's become quite the trend to breed the Yorkies smaller and smaller for more and more dollars! Pretty soon, they'll breed them right into extinction! People are just too d... greedy! |

You should ask her what does her vet think about this? Don't think he would agree. And also try to explain to her that using a small male is pointless as him or the female yorkie might carry bigger yorkie genes from their ancestor. I really don't think she have study their bloodlines... It is not that it is impossible to breed her...but that the chance of something going wrong is so high... it would be CRUEL to do it. There is millions of reasons for her not to breed her dog! Maybe you can e-mail her a link to or print and give her our comments. And by the way, good job for trying to make things right. Her dog is lucky to have you. |
I get that allll the time Riley is around 7lb, and in my opinion his legs are slightly longer then your average yorkie, and so many people look at him like he is some kind of munant or something. always saying "um oh well he's cute an all but isnt he too big for a yorkie"...grrrrr |
3lbs is tiny!!! I can't believe people sometimes! |
