Looking for alternative puppy pads I will be getting my 2 yr old Yorkie in August as some of you know and she is puppy pad trained but plan on outside training. I read that puppy pads can be used for housebreaking a [COLOR=green !important][COLOR=green !important]dog[/COLOR][/COLOR] by moving it closer to the door which is great. However they can expensive. So my question is what can I use as alternative puppy pads that are less expensive than the puppy pads that are sold in [COLOR=green !important][COLOR=green !important]pet [COLOR=green !important]stores[/COLOR][/COLOR][/COLOR] and online? Thanks for any info, Missy |
They have reusable puppy pads ,that are washable.I know a few sellers on YT offer them as well as ebay. |
I use washable pads, too. Just a word of caution.... Toy breed dogs are notoriously awful about going outside to potty in bad weather. I wouldn't be so quick to give up pad training. Cross training is the best of both worlds. Lady was always outdoor trained until I broke my ankle in a car accident several years ago and couldn't take her out for quite awhile. I was able to train her to use pads, thankfully. Besides bad weather, pad training is so handy if they have to be confined because of an injury or surgery. I make sure Lady pottys both outside and on her pads everyday so she knows to do both. |

I TOTALLY agree with Ladymom. I am training my puppy to do both. While I prefer outside....it is not practical for me to rely only on that since I will be going back to work in the fall. She uses the pads at night and when I'm not at home. And when I am home I take her outside. To me this is also a great solution since we have all kinds of weather where I live. You can limit their food and water intake too after a specific time late in the evenings and that will cut back on the amount of puppy pad deposits that you will have to deal with the next morning. I started out using the Natures Miracle brand puppy pads because they smell like grass and it helped her to associate it with going outside. They were a bit expensive...but once she got the idea, i was able to switch to a cheaper brand that I buy at the Dollar General Store! Worked great! However, the Dollar Store pads are smaller in size, so if you have a larger sized Yorkie, you may want to look for a bigger pad because by the time they do their "Round and round and down we go" dance...they sometimes miss the pad altogether~!!LOL~ |
I got some from www.discountpads.com that are wonderful. They sell new & slightly used. The new washable pads, 20 inches by 17 inches are perfect and only $2.95 each. They wash up beautifully. |
I use washable potty pads, but have noticed that even after washing they carry a horrible, strong scent! So, I'm guessing, you may need to replace the washable ones after some time. Washable ones save money in the long run in my opinion. |

Coral is trained to use both also. She uses the pads when i am not home, at night, and when we can't get outside in time (weather, etc.) When i am home she will now go and stand by the door to let me know she needs to go out. |

I use dreft laundry soap and have had mine for over 2 years,although they only use them during really bad or cold weather (once my little 3lber went outside to potty on a windy day and blew straight across the yard thank goodness we're fenced in;) ) |
With the washable pads, I assume that they piddle on it more than once before you wash it right? But my question is, how do you stop the smell of the urine in them. The disposable ones, when some, have a baking soda that neutralizes the urine. But what about the washables? I'm really interested in knowing how it works |
Wee Wee pads The best prices I have found(with free shipping) are at ValuePetSupplies.com. They even carry irregular ones sometimes that are even a little cheaper--they have several sizes--Yorkies are so little that the 17x24 pads work just fine. |
