WARNING: About swiffer Wet Jet
 

Hi everyone, I was just going through the the pet section in my local Craigslist section and I came across this post. It is a warning for pet owners who use swiffer wet jet. I use it all the time and now I am very scared that my Bia who constantly walks on my kitchen floor might slowly be getting sick and could possibly DIE from walking on it. Has anyone heard of this? :confused:

This is something I saw on the web, might be true, might not----please comment if you know anything about it.


"This was sent to me this morning and I thought I would pass it on to all of you. It is something I had never thought about either.

I recently had a neighbor who had to have their 5-year old German Shepherd dog put down due to liver failure. The dog was completely healthy until a few weeks ago, so they had a necropsy done to see what the cause was. The liver levels were unbelievable, as if the dog had ingested poison of some kind.

The dog is kept inside, and when he's outside, someone's with him, so the idea of him getting into something unknown was hard to believe. My neighbor started going through all the items in the house. When he got to the Swiffer Wetjet, he noticed, in very tiny print, a warning which stated "may be harmful to small children and animals." He called the company to ask what the contents of the cleaning agent are and was astounded to find out that antifreeze is one of the ingredients. (actually he was told it's a compound which is one mo lecule away from antifreeze). Therefore, just by the dog walking on the floor ceaned with the solution, then licking it's own paws, it ingested enough of the solution to destroy its liver. Soon after his dog's death, his housekeepers' two cats also died of liver failure. The y both used the Swiffer Wetjet for quick cleanups on their floors. Necropsies weren't done on the cats, so they couldn't file a lawsuit, but he asked that we spread the word to as many people as possible so they don't lose their animals. PLEASE, EVEN IF YOU DO NOT OWN A PET PLEASE FOWARD THIS ON!"

I hadn't heard this nor do I use this. I have forwarded an email to some friends of mine that have yorkies. Not sure if they use it or not. Thanks for the info.

Thank you! Another product that they say may cause some problems is Febreeze. We only found out after my Mom's Yorkie had a hive type reaction and was taken to the vet. They said a lot of dogs react to it.

Thanks so much for sharing this info....I use the Febreeze, guess I will not be using it anymore, I just dont want to take the chance. ;)

I am about 99.99999% posititve that the stories about Febreeze and Swiffer are urbann legends.

It really did happen to my Mom's Yorkie Lacey. The vet asked about a few products my Mom may have used and she said yes to the Febreeze. She never used it again and Lacey never got the hives again. I can only speak for this instance because I went with her to the vet's. She does have more than one Yorkie, but only Lacey had a reaction to it.

Thanks for the links to the urban ledgends, I feel better about it now. I actually use both of those products and would be so sad if something happened to my girl because of that. I am assured now that it was false info, I didn't mean to scare anyone else, I just seen it and had to share it. Thanks for the help on finding out it was untrue. :)

I'm not sure. I'd still be careful. I use swifter in my kitchen which is where I kept Max, now I have to wonder if it contributed to his passing. ?? I also worked for a woman who had 3 pugs who got sick from the Frebreeze she used in their bedding. I had once heard that when it first came out it was harmful but that they had modified it. ??? Again, who knows.

My thought is that dogs, like people, have allergic reactions to some things. For example, a product like simple green. I have used it before with no problems. My friend, however, had tons of problems. It went through her skin and ate her stomach lining. She became really sick.

Anyway, just my thoughts, right or wrong.
