Someone who has RABBITS Please read/help me!!
 
Hey guys, I havent been on in a really long time, but when I used to come here all the time there was someone who had a couple rabbits, I just don't remember their name.

This afternoon I was vaccuming around my rabbits cage like normal, she was hopping in her cage, and she got her foot stuck in the top area, she started screeching, my husband came running into the room (because I was screaming hysterically because I couldnt get her free) he got her loose, and I checked her paw, from what I can tell one toenail was either ripped out or broken, I put quick stop on her to stop the bleeding (it wasn't gushing blood or anything). Aside from being terrified if she is going to have a heart attack from it now, I don't know what else to do for her. She is sitting at the bottom level of her cage, she has cleaned her foot a little, she nibbles on food, but still doesn't seem quite herself. Is there anything else I need to do for her?

I dont currently have a pet rabbit but I did for years when I was a teenager. The same thing happened to my bunny. You did the right thing by putting quick stop on it. She probably isnt her old self because she is in pain. The best thing you can do for her is keep it clean, and make sure she has food and water and is actually eating/drinking. I would avoid getting her over excited because she is probably a bit tramatized from it, and rabbits are notoriously frail in the heart department (this is what eventually killed my Abby). Just keep a close eye on her, and soothingly pet/check on her every few hours. If she doesnt start coming back around in a few days get her into a vet there could be a more serious underlying problem. I hope this helps, good luck to you and your bunny :)

I don't have rabbits currently but I have chinchillas which is a rabbit/squirel. Does your cage have wire mesh in it? You might what to keep her away from that by covering it with fleece. Is the wound covered? (sorry I dont know what quick stop is) I hope she is okay! Keep us updated. The stress/pain form her injury could make her not act like herself. Like said before keep a close eye :)

Thank you soooo much:love: She did eat a little and had some water, now she is laying down.
I just feel so awful because it's my fault she got spooked because of the darn vaccum. But thank you!! I feel a little better now.:)

It's not the mesh stuff, but it's a metal cage with the little square holes. I keep newspaper and grass mats on most of the bottom parts, which is what she's laying on now.
Quick stop is a powder used when you are cutting animals nails, if you cut them too short and they start bleeding, the quick stop makes the bleeding stop :)

Hi

I am no rabbit expert, but I try to take care of all animals and "group" them together. (right or wrong, thats the way I work). Anyway..she is probably sore. I would think that a heart attack would have happened right away. If you are really worried, VET time. But I would just play the watch and wait game. See if she eats and if she is using the foot. I use to raise bunnies and you did the right thing. If she got her foot stuck I would recommend going to KW cages and purchasing a plastic grate for the bottom of the cage. I am not sure what it is called, but I use to use it for momma's with babies so the babies didn't get injured. It allows the poo and pee to get through just not there feet. :) I had a doe that got her heel stuck and her front 2 toes stuck...I had to cut the whole bottom of the cage out to get her free and I used the grates ever since. i'm glad she is okay. Just make sure to keep it clean and she should heal.

Thanks, I didn't know there were different grates you could get for the cages, I've always been afraid of her getting caught in that thing but the only other cages I could find had plastic tub-like bottoms. But now I'm going to get a new cage, and I'm definitely going to get one of those plastic grates for the bottom! Thanks a bunch :)

Many people get the solid plastic bottoms but they carry more bacteria. With the wire cages everything falls through but they can get their feet stuck and eventually also develop sore hocks which is not fun. They get open wounds on the bottom of there feet from continuously rubbing on the metal. So highly recommend the grates for the bottom. :)
