Onesies for After Spay Wear I have seen postings before where baby onesies were used as an after spay option to keep the pup away from the stiches. I am having Pancakes, my daughter's Shih-Chon puppy spayed in a couple of weeks. Just wondering how well this worked for those that have tried it. Do you cut an opening for their tail and "potty-area" or just not snap it? Thanks for any input! Wendy |

Ellie didn't need a tail hole because it tucks against her nicely. It is easy to unsnap when they need to go to the bathroom. Of course this wouldn't be as easy for a peepad trained dog. Ellie did wiggle out of a larger onesie, so I used the smaller one and had an addition sewn on because she is long. Also with the bigger ones she tried to get to her incision through the leg holes. Some will also try to bite through it, so it doesn't work for all dogs. In that case and e-collar is necessary. |
1 Attachment(s) I used the onsies for all my kids. They worked great! Here's a picture of my little prince, Cole, in his onsie. He had some problems when he was neutered and had to wear it for a while. He got so used to it, that he still needs it on when he goes to sleep at night. Just like babies, I'll tell ya! :) |

Ginger was just spayed a few weeks ago and we used the onesie. It worked GREAT! She wore it backwards and it had three snaps. We only snapped one and that way her tail was out. Also, while we were away, she was able to stinky on her pad. I was glad I had left it open to one side or that could have been a mess. |
2 Attachment(s) Using the little onesies works great!! I couldn't imagine using the big cone they gave me when Mandie was spayed. She couldn't hold her head up with it! With the onesie I didnt cut a hole or anything i just snapped it over the tail because it fit just right that it wasnt too snug. I bought the size 0-3mth/premie baby size. Here is a couple pics of how it fit Mandie.. |
My little 17 1/2 yr old Heidi wears diapers at night and if I have to go out. I use the onesies to hold her diaper on and it works great. She is in kidney failure and can't hold it for long periods and is blind and can't find the pee pad all the time.:) |
Thank you! Thanks for all the responses, I am going to get a few to try on Pancakes. I remember using the cone on Pepper and they just can't seem to get comfortable with that on. At least when I am home with her I can give her a break and just let her wear the onesie. She is only wee wee pad trained, she has not figured out that she can do her business on the grass too! She may get them wet, but hey that's what the washing machine is for. Thanks again to all! |

I use "Four Paws Flashy Pants", not for after spay, but as a help in housetraining my older female (got her at 6 years old). They are advertised as an aid in housebreaking and bitches in heat. I think they would work well for the after spaying and they're cute. Take a look at my album and you'll see what I mean. |
I used a baby onesie for Bailey after she got spayed - and it was wonderful. I went to a second hand kids store & found a onesie for 25 cents & it was well worth it!! It made me feel so much better knowing that she couldn't bite or lick her wound. She actually removed almost all of her stitches on her own before the vet recommended that I try the onesie. Contrary to what someone else said they did in a post here, I put the onesie on Bailey so the front of the onesie went on Bailey's tummy side, arm holes went through her front legs, and then I snapped what normally goes around the baby's butt around each back leg of Bailey, leaving one snap un-snapped for the tail to pop through. It stayed on pretty well, although once in a while it would start to come off half way. I only had her wear it in her crate when I wasn't available to watch her. Bailey did pee in her crate with it on a couple of times, but she developed a UTI (urinary tract infection) which is probably why that happened. Overall, it is a GREAT idea to have from the moment you take her home so she can't get to the wound. Don't be afraid to call your vet if your girl exhibits stange behavoir after her spay, as my pup had a UTI and needed additional pain meds & antibiotics after her surgery. Hope everything goes smoothly for you & your girl!! |
