Brand New Puppy-need advice!
 

Hi Everyone,

I just got a yorkie puppy and she was born on April 23rd. So she is only a few months old. Both my fiance and I work full time and we have baught her a little crate which she naps in on a blanket (she also goes and sleeps in there at night, she has gotten used to it so we do not close it, we just leave it open and let her go in there when she is ready for bed) and we put that inside a large fenced area (almost like large baby gates in the middle of our living room) which she roams around in during the day. Inside we put down her pee-wee pads where she can go potty and give her food, water and toys. When we come home we take her for a walk and play with her. The only problem is that she barks and yelps really loud after we take her out in the morning and then have to go to work and we do not know what to do. We live in a condo and we are afraid the neighbors are going to complain soon. She barks really loud around 5 am and does it for a while after. Today she did it for like an hour! I am assuming its because she wants to play once she is up? How do we train her to stop barking and yelping so loud during the day ? I have come home a few times and heard her barking from the outside. I just need some help/advice. I would greatly appreciate it !

Welcome to YT! Congrats on the new puppy. She’s still very young that may be part of the reason. Also, she may suffer from Separation anxiety? If so, it takes a lot of work to correct. You need to follow a strict behavior modification program. You can search the forum for info. Good luck

Welcome to YT :D Congradulations getting your new little yorkie puppy. She is only going on 10 weeks old. THis is very young, and if you guys have to leave her alone all day , this is why I believe she is barking. She is lonely , all by herself. Is there anyway one of you could come home on your lunch hr? Or have a friend or family member stop in at your place a few times a day while you are working? a little puppy needs a lot of attention , and is so much work. Many people do not realise this. Now that you have have, there are going to have to make some adjustment for her needs, this would be best if you guys can accomadate her better. Then your neighbors and your puppy will be so much happier.
Anther thing, your little puppy should not be going outside for walks right now. She is way to young. Wait until she has had all her vaccines. She is at a great risk of beccoming sick from other dogs, the ground, or any animals she could come in contact with. Parvo is the number one killer in young puppies. Keep her inside.

stop bark
 

you can get a stop bark device from revival or JB wholesale it's a tiny little machine. you can plug in it-- emits a loud signal which only the puppy can hear and it helps to stop the barking, I put mine on audio and when they go to barking i say "hush" after a few time they figured it out and now I hardly use it but if I do I put it on silent for my ears but they hear it. It really works.

I live in an apartment, and Miles also has separation anxiety and used to bark nonstop when I would leave. He's calmed down a little bit over time (he's over a year old now), but still gets anxious every now and then.

You sound a lot like me in the way that I do NOT want to disturb my neighbors! Since changing the barking behavior might take a while, I suggest talking to your neighbors. It's amazing how much that can help the situation. Rather than waiting for them to approach you about the barking, go to them first. Kindly explain that you've got a young puppy with separation anxiety, and you are aware that she might be a bit noisy right now. Tell them you're definitely working with her and feel she'll get comfortable soon. Lastly, explain to them that they can call you if they have any questions or concerns. My neighbors appreciated this SO MUCH when I got Miles. I think the fact that I was respectful to them in the beginning made them a little more patient when they would hear Miles. :) It was a huge load off my shoulders to not have to worry about whether or not my neighbors were upset with me.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Just one more question...will she get better with waking up so early as she gets older?
What time do your yorkies wake up?

Oh! Oh! I can answer this one. :rolleyes: Yes, as she gets older her 'need' to wake up early will lessen. Gracie Ruth was a 1:00 to 2:00 a.m. waker for quite some time, but as she's gotten older her wake up time has moved more into the acceptable range of 6:00a.m. I still have hope that it will move to the ideal range of 7:30-8:00 a.m. :D

Sleeping Through the Night
 

Our Bella is now 8 months old. She used to get up as early as 4:30 a.m. Now, I am happy to say she goesin her crate at 9:00 p.m. and we don't hear a peep from her until 6:30 a.m. Of course, we make sure we take her on three structured walks during the day and make time for lot of play time before bed.
Hang in there, it gets better as they grow up.

Coat color
 

My puppy is supposed to be blue & gold when she gets older. What will that look like? I'm just curious to see. Right now shes black and a light brown in the face. I am also curious to find out how big she will get? Someone told me 7lbs at most, but what about height and length? Sorry for all the questions i'm all brand new to this :)

You can leave something that smells like you, a shirt or something, a dap that plugs into the outlet, it mimics the smell of a nursing mother, radio, a tv, good luck

I agree with everyone else. CC did the same thing! We lived in a duplex, and I could hear her barking even when I was backing out of the drive way. I did all of the above. Left the TV on (LOUD), gave her one of my shirts to sleep on...I also gave her a small puppy KONG I bought from Petco...you can fill it with the KONG treat (looks like a bottle of cheese whiz), they come in several flavors...once she started teething I started to fill it with the KONG puppy treats. It kept her occupied. Other than that...it just takes time. She has finally 100% potty trained on her puppy pad...but she still gets mad when we leave her during the day and she shreds her puppy pad. Patience and alot of consistency is the key. Good luck and congrats on the puppy!:aimeeyork:D
