One or Two
 

I am torn in getting one Yorkie or two. My little Roscoe is being weened off his mother and he is due to come home to me soon. The breeder called me and asked if I wanted his sister as well. I would love to have them both but is this biting off more than I can chew? Will training and housbreaking be more stressful or will it be easier? I know that it will be a good thing that they will have each other's company when there's noone home but I also know that when she goes into heat they may try to mate, right? I didn't want to spay and neuter them yet but I do want them to grow up together so they don't face to much of being lonely. What do you all think?

If you get them both spayed/neutered around 6 months of age then you don't have to
worry about them mating or whatever. Females don't go into heat until usually 8 months
of age, if I'm thinking correctly (sorry, I have a male!) Also, I think spaying & neutering
your pets is the smart thing to do regardless.

Personally, if you can afford two, I think two are better than one! Dogs thrive off of
other dogs company and learn from each other. They definitely play a lot and keep
each other company which is nice. I think it'd be almost be easier with the house-
breaking because you get two done in one... and they can teach each other. If you
get a puppy, and then five years down the road get another pup... you go through all
that ALL over again!

The only negatives I've heard is that rather than getting attached to their human, they
get attached to each other. But not always.

I say go for two!

Two! lol. I have have 4 families get two babies from me ( at the same time)and all were thrilled with the decision. You do need to have your baby altered regardless of if you get one or two. Plan to do it right around 6 months of age and everything will be fine.

Two for SURE ! But be careful........they're like potato chips - when you have just one it makes you WANT more - but when you have two and you're gonna want to have the whole bag.

My vote is for 2 also, plus please get them neutered/spayed at 6 months of age regardless of if you get 1 or 2. :)

I only have one baby (Bella) and I absolutely adore her. But in retrospect I definitely wish I would have gotten her brother as well. I play with Bella all the time, but she LOVES being around other dogs and I know she would love to have a sibling.

Will this be your first time having a Yorkie (or any dog)?

Oh definitely get two

I cannot think of how only one would have worked for them and for me
Yorkies are exceptionally social dogs
and keeping them solitary even for a little while is like pure torture for them
and actually it's not that much more trouble having two than one

Go for both make sure you plan on spaying/neutered them around 6 months of age. They will be must easier to train. I have two and wouldn't have it any other way.

I went to the breeder expecting to bring home one yorkie (this was my 1st time being a pet owner) and we couldn't decide on which one to bring home, so we came home with two! I am so happy that they have each other & I love them both SO MUCH...but...it is more work & money than I had planned for. They play together all the time & they also play with us. They are now 8 months old & are very well behaved pups. I will tell you that they are MUCH more work AND much more expensive than I thought they'd be (being I was just expecting 1 originally). When you train, a lot of times you have to train them separate because together it is too distracting to have both together. So it's double the walks (mine walk together most of the time but for training & some 1-1 time with them, I sometimes take them each for a separate walk), double the sit/stay/training time, but they do learn a lot from each other (the good AND the bad). Be prepared for double the start-up stuff (collars, harnesses, clothes, leashes, etc), food and vet bills (remember that they will need to be on monthly heartworm medication (starting at 6 mths I think?), frontline plus if you want to protect them rom fleas/ticks, double most things (although most of the time they only want to play with the SAME toy - we don't get 2 of all toys, but sometimes we do!). You will have to get at least one of them fixed. I would recommend getting both fixed so you don't have to worry about things, that's what we did when Buster & Bailey were 6 months old, and they stay together all the time in their play pen, crate, trave crate, etc. It is WONDERFUL having two, but I have many friends with just one dog & they are very happy as well. Make sure to have plenty of doggy play dates if you get 1 or 2 puppies! Be prepared for almost more than double the work & cost if you get two though. I disagree with the post above. I have just one and she is more than happy. Its not torture for her at all! She has plenty of play friends and loves our company. In the future I may possibly get another but only if I want it and not just for my furbaby.
You should get 2 if you choose but like someone else said its double the money for things.
Pointless having two if you can't afford the insurance or vet bills that go with it amongest other things.

I had one Yorkie for his first 13 years, and then 2 Yorkies for the last 3. It was a hard decision to get two at once, but I am very glad I did.

In many ways it is easier to have 2. They love to play wressle and chase each other, and we do not feel as guilty when we are at work. Everything is a competion with these guys, and its very amusing.

I don't believe that they are any less attached to us humans than my first Yorkie. When I come home, they just compete for who can show us the most love.

Of course it is more expensive to have 2, so that needs to go into your calculations. Some in my local meet up group would certainly disagree, but I believe in the addage - Don't have more yorkies in your house than humans (unless you are a hobby breeder).

Another consideration is should you acquire 2 at once, or wait a year or two before getting the second? I waited for 2 years between getting a second this time around and I think it worked out very well. Still lots of puppy left in 3 y.o. Ms Daisy, but I did not have to train two at once.

and twice the love=)

I had only 1 for eight years before I got the second. A year went by, got a third, 3 months went by, two more are coming, OMG!:eek: Where will it end????!!!:questione:sidesplt:

One or Two Yorkie Babies
 

We bought a brother & sister on April 7th - they're 5 months old now. They are each other's best friend & have a wonderfull time together. Even though they're not mature yet he is "getting interested" in her. We'll take care of that when they're old enough to be spayed & nutered. As for potty training - It's a little frustrating. If you don't see who did what - you don't know who to praise or who to fuss at. All in all I'm very glad we have both of them.

I vote 3 babies :D No seriously, they will be forever buddies. To keep eachother company, to keep eachother warm, and to have a playmate. I say go for it, you will only get another one soon enough anyway when you see how loveable these little boogers are. Good luck and post pictures!!

Hmm I dont know about this I am torn sorry!! I love having just one! Its a lot easier and I can give all my attention to pnut! I take him every where bc with just him it is a piece of cake! He loves just being by his self, he gets all the love and attention. I would love to have more dont get me wrong, but I am not that type of person =) and I am glad I know that lol

Me too lol. I know someday I will get another its just inevitable BUT I love having just Tia because when we go visiting friends , no one minds me bringing her where as 2 would be a problem also traveling on the bus or train carrying 2 would be a problem also.
So she maybe an only child but she gets out and about and socializes well.:D
I guess its like when you have skin kids and you want to enjoy the first one for a while lol

it all depends on you ofcourse..personally i would love to get two when we got our baby i wanted to get her sister too coz the breeder wanted us to have the other one but at the time we couldnn't afford two. personally i think it would be good since the puppy wont be lonely being alone on a new place and would have someone to play with that's not human..at the end of it all i think its all up to you if you're up for the challenge..;)

Hehe I know! I did have another yorkie at a time..Pigpen!! We got him when pnut was about 1 1/2 and It wasnt working out, pigpen was soo hyper and not just cuz he was a pup lol. He was 9 months and always wanted to play always wanted to play with pnut, I noticed pnut was not even acting like himself anymore like pigpen was buggin him. Pigpen HAD to go on walks or he would chew up the base board lol! So I had to find pigpen a new home. IT hurt sooo bad!! But I found him a great home with a stay at home mommy and a big grass backyard(gated) and 3 little skin brothers to play with!! I actually went to visit pigpen to see how he was doing about a month ago and all my grief and depression went away when I saw how happy he was, I hate to say it but it looked happier with his new family!! So thats why I am sticking to 1 pnut!! I tried having 2 and I dont know if it was just pigpens personality or what, but I know pnuts personality and I know that he is a loner!!! As long as he has me he is fine!!

that is really sweet, you done what was right for you both. Im glad pigpen is happy and you are content with your one baby as I am with mine.:D

Yes I am very happy with the choice I made with pigpen, it was extremly hard at the time and I doubted me being a furbaby mom....but It was the right thing to do :D
I honestly think some yorkies want to be the only baby in the house! If you already have one furbaby and they are over 1 year old, and you want to get another one, just think about it! Think about the furbaby personality you already have...and make the right choice...just bc you want one doesnt mean your furbaby wants a brother or sister :D Thats my advice :cool:

As long as you get them neutered I'd go for it. They will learn from each other especially potty trained. If you give treats and lots of praise to the one who goes first the other will see that, and want the same. That's how I've always housebroken mine and it works for me. I think you'd really be happy with two, because you can teach them together rather than train one, and seven months later when you get another you have to start all over. Best wishes. Go for TWO. I had the chance but since I already had a boy when I was searching for a girl, I was afraid THRER would be too much. Big mistake...three would have been great!!!

If you really can afford it, two is better. I am wanting a second doggie, and I wish that I could have got my ollie a playmate from day one. However, financially, I dont know if I would have been prepared for 2 vet costs, grooming, etc.... and you can't slack on the vet stuff... sometime's ollie's hair goes a couple weeks longer than I would like for a hair cut to save a few $, but he always has to have his shots, interceptor, etc. If you know you won't short change the health bills of your doggies, then get 2!

I started out with one 17 1/2 yrs ago. But she seemed to be so lonely when I was at work that I got a second one to keep her company and I'm so glad I did. They were the best of friends. I lost the 16 yr old in March and I can tell a difference in how the other one is acting now but of course she is 17 1/2 yrs old. If you go to my album there is a pic of them sleeping together in their bed. My vote is to get two. :aimeeyork

I had one for almost a year, then went and got another. I am glad I have 2 bc they are the same size and they play very well together. We have 4 dogs total--the other 2 are bigger, it's funny to see a 3lb dog trying to play with a 30lb one. I would totally go get more if my hubby wouldn't kick me out, lol!!!! But on a serious side, the expense is a big thing--they have dental issues and will need yearly cleaning as they age, plus all the routine stuff. Other side is si they are little, so it's the least expensive medication size. Good luck making the choice!!!
