Wound up yorkie Why is my Yorkie so wound up at night, and what, if anything, can I do about it. He is driving me crazy with his wild behavior in the evening. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. He is 1 yr. old and neutered. |
Curious...!s he left alone during the day and gets wound up upon your arrival home? |
Wound up Yorkie No - My husband and I are retired and have always been with him pretty much 24/7. He is worse if we have to leave him for any length of time, but lately he just seems worse no matter what. He does not like us to get on the computer or read, but he does not seem to know what he wants, and just acts up something awful - just like a child throwing a tantrum. |
Gosh I hope there is someone here that can give you some good advice! My son just rescued another larger dog and I noticed that when he leaves for work she will get naughty, and at night she will get wound up if he does not exercise her. He has started taking her to training classes and the last few nights he has really worked with her. She just loves it and I have noticed that she is calmer in the evening... |
Specifically what is the 'wild behavior'? How much excersize does he get daily? Is he getting out 'n about very often? It could be he's bored & has stored up energy to burn. |
Exercise is key here...Apple would act like that, but I walk her 1/2 hr. in the morning, and 1/2 hr. in the evening, if it's not too hot! And I don't let her just meander down the sidewalk, sniffing...I keep her going, and let her know we're out for a walk, not out for a sniff lol...I do let her stop to pee, poop, etc...If she seems to be getting to hot, I'll pick her up and carry her for a minute or two, then she usually squirms to get down...I can honestly say, I don't think I could deal w/her rambuncious ways, if we weren't able to walk...Try it, I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised....By the way, I use a summer type mesh harness that's a little bit cooler than the regular ones....Hope this helps.... |
My baby goes crazy at night too but it's only because he's at work with me all day so when we get home he gets so excited, we play fetch down the hallway if it's raining and cold out, but after dinner I usually take him for a walk if weather permits and that all seems to calm him down for a little while, but I don't really mind his crazies as it all adds fun to my evenings, it's like having a child again. |
Our night Owls!!! Our four and a half month old does the same. Lots of energy :cheer:after 8:00 PM and he wears himself out looking for any trouble :yay_jump:he can get himself into until he can drops himself down and goes to sleep.:dogzzz: |
 We call that the zoomies, our girls go nutso every evening:eek: They sure do sleep well after that, though:D Just play lots:thumbup: Soon he'll pass out in happy exhaustion! |
like the others have recommended above. just make sure you try to make your dog tired before bedtime. go for a walk, play ball, ...etc. |
EXERCISE! Definitely. Take him for a daily 45 minute walk. That will help tremendously. If for some reason you can't walk a day.... do something else, throwing the ball, playing fetch, or something! |
Hi. Well "Dustie " is 4 months and he does the same..even though I play with him in the daytime. He has a nap in his crate after his tea but he always seems to start getting uptight about 8.30..just when hubby and I want to settle down etc. I used to give in and play with him but now I am letting him know that when we have "quiet time" he has to as well...so we just ignore him..It seems to be working too!!! After all they can't have it all their own way can they..even though we love em to bits...:) Chrisann.. |

If it's getting into all kinds of trouble, then the exersize should help a lot. Sometimes I've put Roxy on the treadmill for awhile. When she was really young, still fighting the leash & walking, I could put her on the treadmill w/leash & she'd walk it like a pro. Wasn't even aware there was a leash. Go figure! So if you have access to a safe treadmill with variable speed, give that a try for exercise if you aren't able to do a lot of walking. I stay right next to her while she's on it. |
