Time for Groomer? Since everyone has been posting so many questions about grooming, i thought i would post one myself. Ranger is 3 months old now and i was wondering when the right time to take him to the groomer was. The length of his coat doesn't bother me, but i didn't know if he should be getting trims to keep it nice and shiny. When did you guys first get your babies groomed? |
My Jewels was 3 months and chachi was 4 months. I wanted to get them used to grooming as soon as possible |
I never thought of that, it's a good point.. Thanks! |
I too started Coral young so she would get used to it. The places i checked out all had cheap puppy packages just for that purpose. It was like 15 or 20 bucks until she was 6 months old. |
The groomer I used one time wanted them as close to 3 mo as possible to get them trained young. Our vet said absolutely no groomers until Roxy was completely done w/her shots. So I followed what the vet said. She was probably about 5 mo or so when I finally took her. Roxy was having a very high energy day as it turned out. I should have canceled & felt bad for the groomer. So I didn't expect much, but emphasized only a little trim, no clippers. Groomer did pretty good inspite of Roxy's energy. Her hair hasn't been growing very fast, so I haven't really felt the need to take her back yet. In the meantime, I've read so many horrible groomer stories I don't know that I want to take her back. I just don't think I could handle it if I returned to pick her up & found a real hack job like a lot of you have. I've had too many hack jobs on myself by beauticians who didn't listen to what I wanted, & I'm just not havin' it happen again even on my Roxy. Of course, I don't know if I'm any good at grooming either! lol I don't know if there's a perfect answer to your question. The groomer I used seemed eager to please me, & schedules puppies late afternoon, so she can take her time with them. When I asked her about how long it takes, her answer was 'as long as it takes'. : ) I printed pics of cuts that I like & gave to her. She was thrilled when I said she could keep them. Oh, and when I first called I specifically asked if she does custom jobs as opposed to the basic puppy cut & she does. |
Our groomer wouldn't take Bella until she had her second set of shots. When we did finally take her in she got a bath, trim and nails done. After that the groomer let us bring her in every week (for free) to get brushed and used to being handled by the groomer. |
make certain that your pup has had all his vaccines before taking him to be professionaly groomed. That is the most important thing you need to remember . Wait two weeks after the vaccines are completed. Until then, you can brush your yorkie on your own every day to get him accustomed to being groomed and use to a hair brush. You can also clip him nails very carefully yourself. And bathe him. |
We went as soon as vaccinations were all done and that was good because Reggie had a forest of ear hairs growing in his ears by then that needed to be plucked! Since our groomer is also a breeder and sold us the dog she would meet me at my car and clip Reggie's hair out of his eyes for me before he was done getting all his shots so that he didn't have to come into the shop and be exposed to any other dogs before he had finished his parvo shots and had his kennel cough vaccine. That got him used to being handled a little bit before grooming day. |
As soon as Milly was vaccinated and ready to go outside I made an appointment for her. They didn't have any appointments free for 6 weeks after that, so if it's a popular parlour, make sure to book early :) |
I wouldn't start until the puppy at least has their rabbies vaccine. I know most chains (Petsmart...) makes you bring a copy of the vaccination record before they'll agree to groom the first time. |
