I need advice!
 

I need help from those of you who are experts with yorkies. Our teacup yorkie will be 2 years old in August and we have had her since she was 8 weeks old. This is our first dog. Most of the time she is very loving and cuddly, but she has this other side to her. If she is sleeping in one of our laps and we try to get up or even shift positions, she snaps and tries to bite us. She has even gone for our face. It is very frightening. We are at our wits end with this. We are a very loving family and she has been treated like gold from day one. Last night she did this to my son and actually got him on his hand. This just doesn't seem normal. How do we get her to stop doing this?

My TJ went thru this phase around 2 yrs old too. If he was sleeping and we startled him, he would snap.

So, when he was sleeping, we would take gently to him, saying "TJ I am gonna pick you up". We had to do it over and over, but he eventually grew out of it...

Is she spayed???

LOL there's your problem. i bet she gets what she wants, when she wants and is totally spoiled right? she knows no limits. a lot of our yorkies are spoiled terribly and we love them to death but sometimes there is an overkill.

your situation may be easy to fix. she only does this when she's sleeping on someones lap right? well, don't let her sleep on your lap anymore. if she does it even if she's laying next to you and you move then don't let her on the couch. it may seem harsh and hard to do because you love having her with you, but if she is gonna get mad and bit because you disturbed her then she's gotta go on the floor. that behavior is not tolerated.

there was an episode of "its me or the dog" about a toy poodle that tried to bite the husband every time he went to get into bed at night. the wife wanted the poodle to sleep in bed with them and the poodle didn't want the husband to. So, as soon as the poodle growled or barked as the husband walked in the door, the wife said "ught" in a sharp tone, then put the poodle on the floor. after ten minutes of this the poodle learned that if she wanted to stay on the bed too, she needed to not growl or bite the husband.

you can try the same thing with your yorkie. you probably will get nipped if you go that route. every time you move and she tries to bite, give her a no sound like "ught", "pssht", etc immediately and put her on the floor. to make it easier to pick her up you may want to leave a harness on her so you can just grab that.
