Dida is dieing after being at petsmart hotel! HELP This isnt about my Yorkie Bailey, Its about my moms shihtzu Dida, everyone is so knowledgable and helpful here that im hoping I can get some help! My mom droped Dida who is about 8 years old at the Petsmart pet hotel on the 22nd. When she came back on the 25th to pick her up she was told that Dida was at the Banfield pet hospitol because she had become ill and they were unable to get in contact with her. When she went to pick up Dida at Banfield the vet had said that dida had very low blood platels she was taken there earlyer that morning because someone had noticed blood on her muzzle and that she was bruising easily. The Banfield vet said she would be fine and sent her on her way with some meds. Now, 5 days later Dida is dieing! Dida NEVER had any health problems before! My mom droped off a perfectly healthy dog and got back a dieing dog! This all sounds very suspicious to me, first they were blaming it on a reaction to the vaccine she recieved (from a different vet) before she was droped off at banfield but Dida has never had a reaction to a shot and it was a whole 4 days later that she was rushed to the vet at banfield. Does anyone know what could have happend? Could she have been biten? I called the pet hotel to find out more answers and im just not getting them. I believe something happend to Dida while she was in their care. Please, if anyone has any advice or any idea of what could have happend to her please help! |
Is your Mom taking her to her Vet  |
My advice would be to immediately take her to her regular vet. I'm sorry she's ill and truly hope she gets well. However, if the worse does happen, I'd advise having a necropsy performed to determine the cause. Good luck. |
I am so sorry about little Dida and am not much help. It may help to take her to a different vet in case there is something they can do for her. I hope she pulls through and your mum gets answers as to what has happened. |
she needs a blood transfusion or she will die is what the vet is saying... they dont have what they need to do it... Moms driving to vet that can do transfusion now... |
What did the vet say she has? Has she been seen by your mom's vet? This does sound strange. I'd try to get a day by day report on what exactly happen with her with in Petsmart!! |
my prayers are with you, your mom and her dog. PLEASE keep us updated. |
This is horrible. She should probably make the vet that gave the vaccine aware that pet smart and their vet are blaming this all on the shot. I hope and pray that Dida will be ok. How sad to come home to this. Please keep us posted. |
praying for her baby keep us updated |
IMO, there is more to this. Did Dida end up with some kind of infection? did she have a fever? have a open wound ? something is not adding up right for her to become this sick. This does not have to do with anything in her vital organs? it is related to her blood count, then there is an infection going on. it is how she ended up with the infection in the first place , is what you need to try and find out. Shih Tzu's have very sensitive eyes , and ears. Why was she muzzled? |
Maybe she means muzzle, the dog's face? And not actually a muzzle a dog wears? Her mother is at the vet now |
OMG!!! I will be praying that your Mom's vet will be able to save little Dida. Please let us know how she is doing. |
Prayers for your mom and that precious baby:hands::animal-pa |
I am so sorry your mom is going through this with her little Dida. :( . Hopefully your mom is on her way to her regular vet. I don't have any more advice than what has been given. Once her baby is better (will keep her in our thoughts!) your mother should not give up on getting answers from the petsmart hotel personnel. Imho |
Omg.... your mom and Dida are in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us updated... |
Oh my! I hope the vet is able to help. I'll be interested to hear what they have to say. |
Prayers coming for Dida..........hoping she makes a full recovery. Seems odd that Petsmart couldn't get ahold of your mom, don't they require an emergency # to be listed? How long before your mom went to pick her up did this illness start I wonder. As far as it being a reaction to a recent vaccine.........I understand then even though a dog has never had a reaction before, it can happen with any one given. Not saying that is the problem, just that it can happen. I hope that your mom finds out some answers and that Dida gets better. Please keep us posted. |
Oh sending prayes for Didi ... I feel bad for your mom and I also believe there is something more going on here.. I am sure they require a number when you leave a dog with them.. this is just not right.. again sorry this happened..anne |
we will keepDida and your family in our thoughts and prayers |
So sorry to hear about this little one. They are so precious to us. I will be praying for her. |
Oh my, so sorry to read this. We will keep Dida and your Mom in our prayers and thoughts that all turns out well. |

IMTP is caused by by an aberran immune response. For some reason, the immune system decides to produce antibodies against platelets. The combination of the platelets and the antibody stuck to it is identified as something foreign by white blood cells called macrophages. They promptly cobble up the marked platelets. Why the body decides to start producing antibodies against platelets is unclear. We do know that stress can precipitate an attack (she was in a pet hotel away from your mom). The standard treatment for IMTP is glucocorticoid (steroid) such as prednisone or dexamethasone. It halts the platlet destruction. In some dogs this is not enough and they need stronger drugs such as vincristine or danazol. A way to temporarily boost platelet numbers in an emergency is to give platelet-rich plasma. Alternatively, a whole blood transfusion can help increase red-blood cells as well as platelets, which useful if the dog is anemic. Transfusions do not restore the platelet numbers to normal, but they are elevated enough to stop bleeding Afte treatment begins, platelets should be rechecked 3 days later and a week after that. With this treatment, the dog will probably gain weight, and drink alot and urinate alot. Once the levels are regulated the prednisone dose will be lowered..... Remember this is an episode, and most of the time dogs will only have one attack. So, medication may only be needed for a few months...If platelet numbers begin to falter the dog will need ongoing treatment. |
I am so sorry this is happening. I will be praying for little Dida and your Mom as well. |
i just saw this thread .my prayers to you your mom and little doggie. please let us know how she is doing.:( |
checking in for an update. I hope is all is well. I would love to hear a happy ending on this! |
I'm so sorry Dida is sick. I will keep her and your Mom in my prayers.:hands: |
I was just wondering if Dida was ok? |
I just spoke with my mom. Dida is on watch right and is being put on oxygen? not sure what the purpous for this is but thats what shes telling me. Apparently the Vet that administerd the shot is investigating the company he got the vaccines from, theres a possibility "the vaccines were bad" is what the vet is now saying..... |
