A Warning... I just wanted to mention once again that small children, especially toddlers, need to be VERY closely watched around Yorkies, or any other tiny dog for that matter. Toddlers are VERY quick and their tiny hands fit perfectly around Curly Macs neck. It NEARLY happened again at the park yesterday. I had Curly on her lead while watching Jack play in the water. Lots of kids so I keep the lead short, just long enough for her to be at my ankle. I don't allow anyone to touch Curly as it gets her wound up, I don't know them, and if I let one, the entire crowd comes and suffocates us. Basically, once I let someone touch her, I no longer get to enjoy my son for all the petting and questions etc. Anyway, two kids come rushing over to see Curly. One is about 6 and the other is about 2 yrs old. The second the older boy let the baby's hand go, he went for Curly's neck. He doesn't know better but it's scary! Thankfully, I snatched her up in time but the first time this happened, I didn't expect it and the child got her around her neck and wasn't gonna let go! All the while, the dad laughed. Just wanted to make sure everyone knows to really watch because while the children are cute and mean no harm, they can grab REALLY fast! It's much different with strangers because they don't know to be careful and many simply don't care that they don't know us, just come running up and grab! K, that's all.:) |
YES! totally agree, they may think that it is a teddy bear toy. Squeeze and swing! my gosh....Never take such risks. |
yea, a toddler picked up milu by her ears at my friends house. after that, i kept milu away from her and she just kept screaming because she wants to hold milu, so i let her hold milu once while i supervised, and she squeeze so hard i pried milu out of her hand and left my friend's house. |
yea. when my lil cousin was v young, she kept pulling my yorkie's tail and that hurts because my yorkie yelped! n whenever my dog sees her, she will run away like she just saw the devil! Now that she is bigger and older, she knows hw to handle them. My yorkie (the same one that she pulled her tail) now lets her hold her and cuddle beside her. She is very gentle and understands how to handle them. So, yea, close monitoring is a must. |
Yes, a good reminder:) my youngest daughter is almost two and I agree that those little hands are very quick! She is very gentle with our two, but I am constantly watching to make sure that her hands don't get too grabby. Where were the parents of this toddler? Who lets a two-year old (essentially a baby) approach and touch someone's dog? I am sure they would have suddenly materialised if your furbaby had (understandably) bitten the child through fear or pain. I was taught as a child that you never stroke a dog without asking the owners permission first, and it's a lesson I've passed on to my children.....surely it's just common sense - for safety of the dog and the child  xxx |
I couldn't agree more! My youngest is almost two but is absolutely wonderful with Roxy. We have always had small dogs in my house so all of my children know how to treat them. We taught Eli about nice touches so when he wants to pet Roxy he sits on the floor (I am right there of course) and lets her come to him and then he gently pets her on the head. What an angel butt he is!!! For the times when I cant be there with him Roxy plays in her xpen and the boys leave her be. |
Thank you so very much for your timely reminder. We as yorkie Moms and Dads need to ve viligent about the safety of our furbabies -- there are so many dangers and things can happen so quickly!!! |

Some people don't have dogs, or just don't teach their children from a young age how to handle small dogs. My daughter is turning 3 next month, if we are out on a walk she knows NEVER to touch a dog without asking the owner first, which she is very good at. She will ask " may I pet your dog pweez " and if they are busy talking to me she will ask again til she hears an answer :p I have had incidents with children BIGGER then toddlers trying to be too grabby with Stormy at the park or out in public. I usually don't let kids touch her or anyone for that matter because she is shy around adults in public. Occasionally I let some kids pet her real quickly, I always kneel down and show them how to pet a small doggy. My daughter is pretty good with Stormy and small dogs but of course I never leave them alone together. |
Thankfully, I think those of us who have little kids and Yorkies at home, teach the kids how to handle the dogs. Unfortunately this isn't so the majority of the time out in public. It shocks me still how careless people are with their kids letting them go pet or grab strange dogs. More so, how intrusive ADULTS are on me, my space, my dog, and my kids. I've mentioned it before that when an uninvited hand comes out to touch, pet, grab, or otherwise handle my kids or dog, MY hand instantly grabs the wrist of the offender and turns the hand right back to the body from which it came. I have absolutely no trouble doing this. Almost every day, some stranger will grab my hair and even pull on it. The same goes for my dog and every since I had my first baby, people will always go in for the pat or even a smooch! WTF? |

Good post... some parents are idiots to even allow their children to go to a small dog with out asking.. then they would be so utterly mad if a small dog nipped at them... so parents are at fault on these occasions.. and I have no problem being stern with people... anne |
so true, you've gotta keep a very close watch on them all |
I have to be diligent with Suzi on her walks. She loves people, and want to say hello to everyone. She wants to be petted , and loves the attention. Especially towards kids. Most kids are very good with her, thankfully. Suzi just rolls on her back to be petted. I did not teach her to do that. She just does. I was absolutely amazed the first time she did that , with a very young child who was scared of Suzi , Suzi instanly rolled over , and the little girl broke out in smiles. It was very cute. The biggest thing for me is that I will not allow anyone to pick up Suzi . Suzi is not a tiny yorkie, but she is only about 7-8 Lbs. I still need to be careful . I am not going to allow anyone to play with her roughly , or hold her. When were outside Suzi is so excited to be outdoors she's nutty, running around having a great time , the kids love it. |
