Please help/ Who has traveled in airplane with Yorkie Hi everyone. I need help has anyone traveled with their yorkies on an airplane? I'm worry that it would be a nightmare for my baby. |
I traveled from Pittsburgh to Texas. My Sasha was nervous but it really wasn't too bad. She had to be in her carrier under the seat in front of me. We just kept putting our hand in there and petting her. We took her out and held her once but got yelled out. Just make sure you have water available for her. We had a bowl but didn't buy a bottle before we got on the plane. It took too long for them to come around with it. I think it cost us $80 each way. You would think for that price that you could hold them on your lap once you are in the air. |

What airline did you travel with and did you need a dog license? |
I have traveled lots with Sissy. We have done 5 hours at once several times. She does really well. I make sure to have water with us, as well as disposable potty pads. To break up a long flight, I will take the carrier into the airplane bathroom, put the pee pad on the floor (which takes up all the floor space) and then let her walk around and potty if need be. It helps lots and occasionally she will actually go. Then you just throw away the pee pad!! We also use these on the floor of the bathroom in the airport as well. I always have a blanket in the carrier in case the floor is cold. I have also taken some treats to make sure she doesn't get too hungry along the journey. We have only traveled on Northwest. They do not require a health certificate for the dog, but some states require the health certificate. |
Have you checked the "Traveling with Yorkies" section of this forum? It is filled with excellent advice. |
I flew with Maxwell from Cedar Rapids to Wash DC. He threw up 3 time at the airport from the car ride, and was fine in the carrier at my feet. Quiet as a mouse. |
I've flown with Cocoa quite often down to MS. She is a very quiet doggie. As suggested make sure that you have a little blanket along because it seems as if there is always a draft from the air conditioning. It is against the rules to take your baby out of its carrier and I wouldn't recommend it, but I have done it when Cocoa has started to get upset and anxious. (She's a 3 lb. fearful puppy mill doggie). Put her under my coat on my lap. She is always quiet as a mouse and doesn't move. It wouldn't have worked with any of my others. When I've had long lay-overs, I have found corners where no one is and taken Cocoa out, put a leash on and let her move around a little in a very small space with me sitting on the floor with her. Just to stretch. |
Its good to drive her around in the car alot to so that she gets used to traveling in the carrier. Before I fly mine I use the carrier alot so they are really comfortable in it. |
i took kati with me on AirTran..not a good experience It was extremely hot in the cabin and kati was panting alot..they did not put the air cond. on until we were in the air about ten min. all together we were in a hot cabin for over a half hour..the people all around me were so nice but the stewardess would not even let me unzip her bag just to touch her and make sure she was O.K. even the passangers were complaining about how hot it was...make sure she has pleanty of water and a spare in case one in her carrier spills. You may even check with your vet to see if they will give your baby a tranqulizer..I travel alot in my car and if kati gets too stressed my vet gave me valium for her..she weighs 6 pounds and she is supposed to take one quarter of the pill. It really helps to keep them from getting so stressed...Good luck and i don't mean to scare you..P.S. if you can fly first class it will be much better... |
It was either US Air or United that we flew and we didn't need a dog license. They said to bring verification of her shots but never asked to see them. It was also very warm on our airplane leaving Pittsburgh. They didn't turn the air on until we took off. |
I fly a bit with my dogs when traveling to dog shows. Usually American. Believe me it's a cinch. Dogs do well when traveling, the white noise seems to lul them. No you don't need a license, but you might want to be prepared with a health certificate. |
when I fly with my dogs, I AM ALWAYS THE LAST PERSON ON THE PLANE! I wait at the gate until they A. either call my name, or B. they say this is last call. or final boarding. and I wait somemore if I know there's still a line in the jet way to the plane. that way if it is hot, because they can't turn a/c on til airborne for some reason. my dog doesn't have to suffer so long. Also. you could put a small dish of Ice you could get from a vendor right before you board. OR use a cool mat. the kind that has the gel in it you get it wet and it stays cold for days. then they can lay on that. I bought my cool gel mat at gwlittle.com my dogs have never barked or whined or cried when flying. They know somehow that they are doing something special with mom and dad and thats good enough for them. Happy flights! I'm sure it will all be fine. |
wherever I go Gracie's there with me ... its really easy if your dog is use to being in a bag or crate or whatever you use.... Gracie was not the first time I flew with her... now I have her as a service animal so I dont have to have her in her bag! its GREAT!!! :D good luck and happy travels;) |
I like that. How can I make Mia a Service Dog. Help with that please. What are the advantages of such. Quote:
