Won a Yorkie through a raffle????
 

One of my customers told me they got a yorkie. "Actually we won her" she said. Whaaat???? Apparently they went to a community summer fair/festival thing and they had a yorkie there on raffle! Her son wanted one so bad b/c he loves Uni so he bought 11 $1 tickets, so he could have actually won her for $1.

I am so holding my tongue, and asked her a few more questions, but didn't want to act like a total psycho b/c she is a lovely person and her kids are totally nice and sweet. She said a local pet store donated the pup, but it was basically advertising for them. I have heard of this pet store. They are down the street from me. I had another of my customers who got a daschund (sp?) well weiner dog there, and it ended up with kennel cough. The store owner paid for the vet bills, from what my customer told me.

Everyone keeps talking about this place, asks if I have been there. No of course not, b/c pet stores are bad, but since I have not actually been inside I don't know if it is clean or what.

Anyway, they brought the pup in to meet Uni, but after I found out how they got her I was kind of like uuuhhh, should you be bringing her in here? I don't even think she's had all her shots yet. She looks ok, playful, looks like a full yorkie, but who knows?

Should I have said something to them???

Also I had read in the breeder forum about a breeder who seems "iffy" at best who also raffled off a yorkie (this was an old thread but still up at the top pretty much). the thought of raffling off a dog makes me very uneasy to say the least.

Oh wow, well congrats to them for getting a yorkie. I hope they don't end up with any health problems, obviously it didn't come from a great place or it wouldn't have been up for "raffle" to begin with. At any rate, you are absolutely right about not wanting the pup near yours until you know it is healthy, and it shouldn't be around other dogs until it has had it's shots as well. Maybe you might want to give them some information about that type of stuff so they aren't putting him/her in any danger unknowingly

What up with the FREE Yorkies lately...

This is horrible but really nothing would surprise me at this point :( I had also heard that a very large charity had also wanted to do this with a donated puppy from Petland. It was stopped after protests were started. I remember years ago winning goldfish when you tossed a ping pong ball into its bowl at caravels they don't even do that any longer. But raffling off a puppy should be against the law! :mad:

I own a little boutique. Uni is there with me everyday. She's totally famous around here. :rolleyes: So far there are three families that I know of that have gotten yorkies b/c of Uni. One from her same breeder, one which is the raffle one, and the last one I don't know from where.

I really hope the pup is ok. There's lots of people that have gotten pups from pet stores and turned out ok, so hopefully this one will too.

That sounds like so much fun!! I would love to own a huge ranch, fully fenced in and all grass. Maybe 5-6 acres. With a vet clinic (I'd be the vet), a pet store (with all the best stuff and healthy foods/treats/etc), and an animal rescue :). Hahaha one can dream!

5-6 acres definitely won't get you a huge ranch but it will be enough rooom to put a nice clinic with yard and maybe a store... you sound ambitious! Go for it!

Actually they still do the game where you win the goldfish here. My niece just won one at a festival. I havent ever seen a puppy auctioned off here though and I hope I never do

Really, I haven't seen that in years. All that I remember about the goldfish is that by the next day they would always be floating :( I was always really good at the game and would win one for everyone to take home. But there was one that I won that lived for years! I named him Zeppelin :p

I just can't stop thinking about that poor puppy. It is so sad, born in a puppymill, then raffled off by a petshop at a fair. What a sad set of circumstances to be set into motion all for greed :(

Well Capt Noonie~maybe since your little guy is so popular you can keep tabs on the little guy and if anything goes wrong you will be there to help out/offer advice. :) Please keep us posted if you hear any news about the pup. I believe some things happen for a reason and maybe you and Uni can be a guardian angel for the little guy ;)

A few months back, I had a litter of puppies advertised in our local paper and I actually got a call from someone who wanted me to donate one of my pups for a raffle to raise money for a charitable org. She seemed surprised when I told her I thought raffling off a live animal was a terrible idea. I tried to explain to her how I needed to meet whomever took one of my pups and get to know them before I placed my puppies with them. :eek:
Hopefully this little one ended up in a great home, but I'm with you, that is such a bad idea.

I am also glad that she at least went to a good family - one that really seems to want a Yorkie. I hope everything turns out ok for all of them. Raffling off a Yorkie is totally horrible!!

oh my goodness I think ive heard it all now. Raffling a pup? How old was she?

Ick! I hate those carnival games where you win fish and bunnies!! Oh My those poor people who get those bunnies, heck those poor bunnies!! I don't know about your carnivals but they still do the goldfish at mine and I hate it!!

I hope this puppy went to a good home. The poor dear has been through a lot and deserves a good home. Who knows, maybe he is perfectly healthy and was an answered prayer for the little boy who now owns him, all things happen for a reason. ;)

Actually Uni and the raffle dog are both girls ;) LOL Anyway, the pup wasn't too young, hair already changing color on the head, so I would guess about 3 months at least, def had to use two hands to hold her. She seemed ok, playful and responsive. We always to the "bite the air" trick. Lightly blow a steady stream of air from your mouth to the pups face, and if they try to bite it, then at the very least they are curious, playful, and their brain is working. heh heh.:p

From what the mom told me they have already taken her to the vet, and seems ok. Hopefully she'll stay that way. Like I posted earlier, the same pet shop sold my other customer a weiner dog that had kennel cough. But usually my customers check in with me at least a few times a month, so yes I'll be able to keep tabs on her a bit, see hows she's doing.

I know this family, and they are really nice and the kids are sweet. I haven't been inside their home, but nothing about them seems weird, so I'm sure its fine. The only thing is the daughter is a bit on the young side and she is a bit rough (she broke her arm in gymnastics) but the brother is a little older and keeps her in check from what I've seen.

I hope everything will be ok. I'm just surprised that so many people here (everywhere actually) would be ok with a dog raffle??? A lot of people around here are uneducated about the whole "teacup" thing. Just earlier today someone commented that Uni was "so big". She's 5 1/2 pounds.

If I didn't have a yorkie and I saw Uni, I'd want a pup just like her, too!

Regarding the raffle, it really is horrible the pup was given away like that. I'm glad that the yorkie got a good home, though. It could have ended a lot worse for the pup.
I'm guessing the family has never dealt with a yorkie before? I don't think it would hurt to give any advice you have; I would think they would be thankful for the advice. At least I would if I were them. :D

They did the goldfish toss at my primary school when I was in first grade. I wanted one so bad that I waited in line, but when I finally got to the front, I felt super bad for the goldfish. I didn't think I could properly take care of them and didn't want them to suffer, so I missed on purpose. :D

If I were a breeder I would not be ok with raffling off one of my puppies. If I were someone looking for a yorkie and I had the ability to take care of one no matter the condition I would consider entering the raffle. Do I think the whole idea of a raffle is ok?? Not at all! For the puppies sake there is no way to ensure they are going to a good home if you raffle them off. For all you know every puppy mill in town could enter the raffle. I could not live with myself knowing that one of my pups went to a puppy mill or even a home with a bad situation! No way, no how!!
