Vitamins? My question is should Ruby be taking a multivitamin? Here is the situation. Her breeder fed her home cooked food mostly. I still do this. She eats chicken, brown rice, peas, sweet potatoes, carrots, cottage cheese, apples, bananas,and string cheese. She eats very little dry food(Innova), maybe a tablespoon, mixed with canned food,maybe another tablespoon, in the morning. I am worried that she is not getting the vitamins and minerals she needs in this diet. She just is not interested in dry food. I purchased a multivitamin called VitaPet Puppy by Naturvet. It is a chewable and according to the bottle she should get half a tablet daily. Does it sound like I am doing the right thing? |
If more than about 10% of the diet is homecooked, supplementation is mandatory. A regular multi-vitamin is meant for homecooked diets and the diet would still be unbalanced if you use that one. A combination of supplements need to be used or something out of the Balance IT line (Balance IT can be used alone). However, their main product contains menadione which is controversial. You can also talk to a canine nutritionist. |
i agree with crystal- you need a multivitamin that is formulated for home cooking- you also need to make sure she is getting the proper calcium/phosphors ratio. And the proper k/cals for her weight. I would also suggest a nutritionist. I used Susan Davis- Holistic Veterinarian Pet Nutritionist Holistic Pet Care She costs $81 i think for an hour consult. You fill out a form online first- and her receptionist will get back to you with what time works and the you'll call Susan. She will give you the proper amount of food she should be eating and what supplements to use. Layla gets a multivitamin and calcium. She is also on a probiotic that Susan sells and another supplement for her pancrease (Layla has pancreatitis) MANY YT users have used Susan and just rave about her. |
Absolutely she needs supplements if she is primarily eating a home cooked diet. Getting the calcium to phosphorus ratio is critical as if it is not right, Ruby can develop skeletal, cardiac and neurological issues. Either consult a nutritionist or follow a diet prepared by a nutritionist that includes the supplementation exactly. |
