How do you feel about the cross breeds? So my friend is allergic to her shorkie. (shih tzu/yorkie) And she said she wanted me to take her in for her because of her allergies. She tried to see if her brother wanted him, but her brother's allergies are worse.:( I was just wondering if you guys have any of the cross breeds? Do they have alot of health problems? Thanks in advance. |
It's really your discission. Do you know / like this dog? Do you have a "perfect" dog in mind and this one isn't it? YTers love all dogs and all mixes. So don't feel we wouldn't talk to you or something like that. Tons of us on here have other dogs besides yorkies!!! My Barley (Yorkie) is a rescue who came from a shelter, so I have no idea if he's a pure breed yorkie or not. So please look into your own heart and ask yourself if this is the right dog for you. Please, let us know what you decide. If you don't take it, maybe you can foster it and see if someone on here would like to adopt it. Best Wishes!!! |
As far as health problems, you really don't know. If parents were healthy and without gentic problems all should be fine. |

I have a Yorkie/Maltese and I love her. I think mutts make the best pets. The cross in my oppinion makes for a calmer dog. I do not think they have any more health issues then a full breed and in a lot of instances less health issues. I think you would be fine. With that said; I also have to state that I do not condone purposely breeding for these so called designer dogs. In my oppinion there are too many "Mutts" in shelters and rescues that need homes. I don't like the word mutt I prefer mixed pup but the truth of the matter is that years back before all the greed came into play that is all these dogs were, now they give them a fancy name and charge a fortune. Sorry to get off course. I think your friend's mix would make a wonderful pet if you are looking for another. Elaine |
1 Attachment(s) Heres my baby. do you have any pictures to share? |
While I don't think people should breed for them because they are too many pets available, and you cannot predict the results when you are mixing breeds, I do think they can make great pets. I happen to love both the Shih Tzu, and the Yorkie, and think a cross would be a fine dog. Concerning health, every dog born gets half its genes from one parent and the other half from the other parent, so it really depends on whether the parents were healthy, not if their genes were Yorkie or Shih Tzu. Best of luck! |
I have pictures to share I just have to go peek really quick on how to psot them again. He really is one of the sweetest things. He does really well with her cats and other animals. I think he's just perfect. He's just 8 weeks old. |

3 Attachment(s) I think you all are aware that I brought home a new baby a week ago. a 8week old little pure bred female shih tzu. She is adorable. And quite a handful:) Were back to the puppy stage completely , and Baby Miley is only 2 lbs! Suzi seems huge at around 7-8 Lbs ! However little Miley Boo chases Suzi around the place , it is funny:p The only way Suzi can get away from Miley is to jump on the couch or my bed. Suzi surprised the heck out of me, I had no idea she would behave like that towards a new baby. But, she has gotten better. Little Miley is fearless though. Suzi has stolen her toys , when she isn't looking, and I can't help but laugh at them. They are too funny . they have never been agressive towards each other. I think a Shih Tzu Yorkie Mix is a wonderful combo! I do agree that it depends on the temperment of the dog though, because right now, I have a mild mannered yorkie, and a fiesty little shih tzu pup ! usually people think of a yorkie as the fiesty breed and the shih tzu as the laid back breed> I don't know what happend with these two! Perhaps Miley Boo will settle down when she is older! Because right now she is a handful! Little booger is nippy and loves to do that to me over and over , it hurts ! I think she is just playing? I think mixes make great pets but I do not believe people should breed them. There are shelters full of mixed breeds who are looking for good homes and I think that people who breed mix breeds are doing these desperate babies an injustice (sorry if bold but just my opinion). With that being said, I did own a peekapoo and a chipin. My peek was very allergic and cost me hundreds of dollars a month in meds. I do not feel that this was the person I got her from's fault, I just feel that she was a sick little baby. My chipin on the other had is the best dog anyone could ask for. She is smart as a whip and has enough minipin in her to calm down the chi. I got her from a lady whos mini pin and chi mated on accident. |
My Jemma is a Shorkie, Shih/Yorkie. I have the best of both breeds bundled into a little 4 pounder. She's 8 months now and don't think she'll get all that much bigger. AND she is a real cuddlebug besides cute. |
My Gizmo is a Chorkie (Yorkie-Chihuaha mix), I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world! I love him to death and he is just my little bundle of joy!:D |
Hey guys, I haven't really posted much because I'm trying not to jinx myself! I'm hopefully (if nothing comes up) gonna go over to utah on thursday and be back friday. We haven't met him yet, because the people we are getting him from aren't really friends, sorry I said that before, I was super tired that day:rolleyes:. She said he is 8 weeks old so he must be fairly new to them. I'm hoping all is well. |
