Puppy claws
 
Hi there,

I would like to get another Yorkie - a little girl puppy sometime in the future. We, unfortunately, have a very sensitive wood floor so I am worried about the little puppy claws damaging the floor. I was thinking about little booties for a while. Any ideas?

The flooring is just stupid, our Rocky was able to scratch it up and you know Yorkies do not weigh a lot. I'm not happy with the floor and have tried for a refund but could not get one. :(
(Note: The brand is Torlys - Beech Summit in Sahara colour and I do NOT recommend it!)

Any ideas on how to ensure the hardwood floor stays OK while making sure a new puppy is happy?

I would think if you use the samnder on them instead of cutting them then they will stay rounded and dull and not scratch anything. Don't think booties are going to stay on a puppy for very long. ;)

We have wood floors. Munchie nails are cut so there is not one scratch

Thanks so much for the advice.

I agree about the booties ... they would be pulled off very quickly. Filing them down could work well.

My floors are ridiculous. We have a fridge with an ice machine in it ... if ice to the floor there are small dents. (!!) It is just stupid!

Oh man! Is there a warrantee, I would be burnin up thier phone lines with complaint after complaint until they got tired of hearing from me and did something about it. Those floors are not cheap!

I have complained. They won't help - they are only replacing some of the damaged slats after all our complaints. :( Cost us a lot of money, we've got hardwood everywhere but in the bathrooms and the small entranceway. Thanks for the advice though!

Is there some kind of wax or protective layering you can do to the floors? At least they're going to replace the damaged ones...:rolleyes: They should also take care of the protective layering.

As long as your baby's nails are not touching the floor when they're standing, it doesn't need to be cut. As mentioned by myteddybear, you can round & smooth the end of the nail w/Petipaws or a dremmel.

I wouldn't have them wear shoes/socks...dogs can only cool themselves through the pads of their feet & by panting (through their tongues.)

Good advice. Unfortunately no wax coating available for the floors. I will try the filing thing though when I end up getting a new puppy though. Even from the groomer's Rocky's nails click when he walks (but they don't touch the floor when he stands). I may also try to put some type of mat/carpet down in the high traffic (fetch) areas to minimize the chance of damage.

Really, dogs less than 18 pounds should not be able to dent the floor. Scratches I can live with - dents are unacceptable to me.
