What size/weight is too big for a hawk to grab a Yorkie? On this site I have heard about hawks loving these little cute dogs also. But are these only the real tiny ones like the pups. Would they grab a full adult? I have many hawks in my area so I would really like to know how concerned I should be |
hawks can pick up large rabbits, so I would say yes that could pick up a grown yorkie. 7lb and under which is what yorkies are to be. |
I suppose the larger the hawk the larger the animal it can grab |
I have heard of one picking up larger dogs..(a Lhasa)....... unless it is > 20#, I would keep watch. |
Again, depending on the size of the bird and its level of hunger, believe me its not unknown for them to go for Lambs. |
 How scary! |
I have posted in the past about my unending trouble with hawks. To a hawk, a yorkie looks like a rabbit, a big mouse or just plain FOOD! I have looked all over the web for ways to protect my dogs from the "devil birds" but the only thing I have found, is be out there with them at all times! I cant tell you how many close calls I have had even when I am out with them. Hawks have very little fear as they are predators and I have had them dive bomb ME! When they are nesting and raising young, they are all the more dangerous, especially to a 3-4 pound dog. Mother nature is a fascinating thing....I have learned to listen to the trees now, the jays and the doves will always tell you if a hawk is nearby. Hawks will raid nests and the jays go CRAZY and "scream" when a hawk is within 100 yards of their nest. The jays r never wrong. There is a difference in the calls of the jays....when they are just being social its a more relaxed twill, but when its a hawk...its excited and panicky. I dont know if this will help you, but it has been the best protection I have found so far besides enclosing a pen for my 3 babies. Good Luck!! |

I have heard hawks/owls can pick up to 13 pounds....but I can't recall where I read that. Probably here at YT! :p |
Better safe than sorry! I am constantly nagging my husband about keeping an eye on Cooper. He always laughed at my ranting about the hawks. Well, we rented a summer house that had a large grass area. We were all lounging around and Cooper was having a ball racing around the lawn. All of a sudden we looked up and there were several hawks circling Cooper! I shrieked and picked Cooper up. My husband doesn't laugh anymore and he keeps a very close eye on Cooper! |
