mineral oil in eyes? Hi guys, I am reading a yorkie book and it says that before bathing your yorkie you should put a drop of mineral oil in each eye...it doesn't say why. Do any of you do this and what is the purpose? Also, does it sting or make infection more of an issue? |
I've never heard or read of this but I'd like to know too. |
I read it in The Yorkshire Terrier for Dummies book |
I'm not really sure, but the only thing I could think of is maybe to make almost a barrier in case soap/shampoo gets in the eye, to protect the eye. Maybe? |
I thought it was strange at first too but it works and it doesn't hurt them at all. The mineral oil is used to protect the eyes from the soap and it's great if you need to clean around the eyes. I used to use it years ago but now I use baby shampoo instead. |
Okay.....That makes sense. Thanks! |
Yes, it is a barrier to protect the eyes from any irritants from the shampoo. Same as placing cotton balls in their ears to prevent too much water seeping into their ears. I use baby shampoo on Schatzie's face as it says it is tear free. I of course had to test it myself, so dabbed some of that shampoo in my eyes. Nope, didnt hurt a bit so guessing Schatzie is fine. On the rest of her body she gets normal shampoo for doggies. |
When you say baby shampoo are you using people baby shampoo or tearless puppy shampoo? |

puppy formula shampoo/tear free. :p Im not too thrilled with using human products on the pets as the PH is different. |
