Does my puppy weigh more than she should? Hello everyone, i was just curious if my yorkie Gabby weighed too much. She is almost 12 weeks old and weighs 4.2 lbs. I have read that yorkies don't usually get more than 7 lbs. Does she weight too much? Thank you everyone! God bless and take care. |
It depends on how much her parents weighed. I have heard of some yorkies getting up to around 10+ pounds. Im sure that she isnt over weight because when she grows a little more she will need the extra weight. My puppy now who is cocker/westiepoo is 4 pounds at around 11 weeks. Dont worry to much about it :) |
The general rule of thumb is to double the weight at 12 weeks. |
She will probably grow to be over the standard (7 pounds), but I don't think you need to worry about her being overweight at only 12 weeks. I have a yorkie that was estimated to be around 6 lbs full grown according to the size chart that is sometimes used a rule of thumb on here, and she is now almost double that. The bottom line is you really never know 100% how big or small these little pups will be. :) |
That's exactly how much Cohen weighed when I got him at 12 weeks. I had the same reaction as you. Your pup will probably end up weighing more than the standard, but you won't even notice--because you'll be so smitten! :p |
Yorkies have the Yorkie personality no matter what shape or size they are. All are equally adorable. You'll find yourself wanting another one in a short time.:D |
Welcome to YT!! The AKC standard for a yorkie is 7 lbs. The rule of thumb is triple the 8 wk weight and double the 12 wk weight. Both of mine were true to this. Sounds like your little one is going to be around 8-9 lbs....which is still a small dog. We have some on here that are bigger than that. Although mine are on the smaller size the bigger ones are more durable. |
You're supposed to take the 12 week weight and double it - but that doesn't always work. Jackson weighed 6 pounds at 12 weeks and now he is 14 pounds at 8 months old. I LOVE his size. He still seems small to me but he's very, very sturdy and can withstand just about anything. He can be rough housed with other dogs and kids and be fine... he can jump on and off the bed and couches absolutely fine! I prefer his size ;) |
Suzi was 3Lbs at 9weeks. She is now 7.5 Lbs at 15months old . Sometimes it is hard to determine just how big a yorkie is going to be as an adult. :aimeeyork |
thanks everyone I just want to say thank you to everyone for your answers. I wanted Gabby to be a small dog but really when it comes down to it, i love her the way she is and always will. Thanks again everyone!! |
