Need Your Help What is a good puppy food? The vet said try anything natural from petsmart. Not sure which one to choose. How's Nutro Natural Choice--They also have a canned food lamb and rice. The vet said try a canned as well because his teeth are just starting to come in. How's Royal Canin or Science Diet natures best puppy food or small bites with fish oil. If you have any other suggestions I would appreciate the input. |
There's a great sticky thread at the top of the Health/Diet forum about grading your dogfood. Many foods have already been graded and are listed for you. Also, a good website that a lot of people use is www.dogfoodanalysis.com - go into the Review section and try to pick a food with at least four stars. Please, DO NOT FEED Nutro. Google it - the food is linked to many illnesses and even deaths in dogs. Good luck with your search!! |
Thank you so much for your help. |
Have you seen the Diet forum, Yorkie Health & Diet - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community. I agree with your vet, and as long as you are not buying the very cheapest of foods, you'll probably be all right, but there are many different opinions on what is the "best" food. The information can be confusing, diet is usually more important if you dog has allergies, or a problem digesting certain nutrients, and then it can be much more difficult to select the right diet. Petsmart does offer a refund on any food you buy, if your dog has difficulty with it, or just won't eat it; so keep those receipts. Joey wouldn't eat most of the higher rated foods, and so we decided on a medium rated food. He seems to be dong well. You can't put too much confidence in the ratings, there are only reviewed by one person, and they don't say their credentials, so sometimes I don't feel like I'm being giving the full picture of the food. Some of the things I considered when choosing a brand was convenience to purchase, did it have to be ordered or could I buy it locally? Nutrition, of course is important, and I have a little background in nutrition so I believe I'm able to understand some of the facts, and choose a food with ingredients that I believe to be healthy. The manufacture and their reputation, is important - how are they on recalls, how long has the company been around, and how big of company? I like a company that's large and has been around for a while, because if something does go wrong with their product and they have to recall it, you are more likely to hear about it fast. Another important consideration was did Joey like it, would he eat it? So many of the brands he just would not eat. These are some of the things you might wish to consider when buying a food. Remember when offering a new food go slowly, just give one part of the new food mixed with three parts of the old food, and the next day give half and half, and if the dog is experiencing no tummy upsets, you can give them 3 parts of new food to 1 part of old on third day. On the 4th day, it would be all new food. Cut back and go slower, if there are any problems. If they pick out only their old food and leave the new, you might have to find a different brand. Best of luck, and try not to go nuts! :D |
Great advice, Nancy. ~Joanne~ |
I feed Lola Innova Lil Bites mixed with ground chicken and she loves it! |
I would NOT feed Nutro to even a rat! There's WAY too many coincidences of dogs getting sick and dying on Nutro food. If shopping at Petsmart, I think the only food I would use is Blue Buffalo. If shopping at Petco, they have a few more options, such as Wellness and Solid Gold. Solid Gold Just a Wee Bit is good and is also good for all life stages. Your best bet is to find a small petfood specialty boutique which carries some of the better brands like Innova, Nature's Variety, Acana, Solid Gold, and many others. Also if you have a Tractor Supply or a feed store, they usually carry some of the good brands. |
Great advice, Nancy. And personally, I wouldn't feed Nutro. I started reading WAY too many horror stories about it online and it killing dogs. If you're looking to buy a food at Petsmart, I'd go with Blue Buffalo or Natural Balance. Jackson eats Innova right now and loves it! |
I use Taste of the Wild for all my dogs. They are all shapes, sizes, and ages. i\It is an all life stages food. My yorkie is 7 months old and loves it. i started her out on Blue Buffalo because the pieces were smaller, but she manages the bigger pieces fine. (she is 4.7 lbs) She would always try to get the bigger dogs food so i just switched her over! |
my chico i usetoo give him ekunuba now he is on science diet because i think he has allergies. |
i feed my puppys acana three fresh fish grain free i also feed my adults the adult kind as a couple of mine have allergies to grains they seem to really like it and they have the most beautiful hair |
