skiddish I'm getting so frustrated. Winston is just the perfect yorkie. He's 1 yr old and has been sleeping through the night since the day I got him when he was 2 mos old. He sleeps in his crate from 9:30 pm until 8:30 am every night. He is completely potty trained. There is just one problem. He will not let anyone pick him up without cornering him. Once he is picked up he is just the most loving little dog. He will sit with you for a very long time and just be so happy. Does anyone have any idea why he will not let anyone pick him up without a chase? |
I have no clue! How old is he? Has he been around lots of people? If he is young it could be just because it is something that he doesnt know, it may just take time- take him out as much as possible, just to get him used to meeting people constantly and noises. Good luck. |
Maybe try getting him to come with treats, we have had to do that with Bella before. Wanted to also say hi and welcome. :welcome4: |
sometimes I think it is part of their personality. we have one that loves to be loved, he would allow you to old him 24/7. the other one wants to be picked up and then when you hold him he is all wiggly like he is uncomfortable so you have to put him down. He will sit in your lap but you can't carry him around like the other one. Its funny because I can totally tell he is jealous when we cuddle with the other way (pick him up and just kiss him and hold him like a baby) but if you try to do that to Sam forget it. |
He is use to you going after him. So I suggest making him come to you. I like the treat idea. What is his favorite snack? Show him the snack and sit on your sofa and call him. This will require patients. Dont pick him up until he comes to you. Good Luck to you and Winston. |
Roxie is cuddely and loving and will sit with me as long as I'm sitting. She likes to be carried around by ME pretty much only but will tollerate it from other family members. She really doesn't like anyone reaching down to scoop her up. If someone sits down she'll jump right up to them to say hi. I think they just get tired of everyone wanting to pick them up. Plus can you imagine how people must look to them? They are so small and to have these monster sized creatures always reaching down to grab them must be scarey. She used to be really bad about it so I started sitting on the floor and just gently coaxing her with treats and the come here command. I just did a little at a time and worked at it for a few days and she started picking it up. She's much better now but I agree with one of the other posters that it is part of their nature. Sometimes they just like things on their own terms. Just try getting on a lower level, be very gentle and patient. I'm glad Roxie doesn't like strangers picking her up, she can run away from people she's not familiar with anytime. |
Jackson won't let people he doesn't know just come up and pick him up. He will kind of back away from them like "Don't pick me up- I don't know you!" lol. Once he meets you one day though, if you come back the next, he will be SO excited to see you, and greet you with excitement. He has to meet you at least once and be around you for an hour or more to warm up! But he's not really a skiddish dog, I think that's just his personality. |
Piper does the same thing. She is very affectionate loves to be held yet when you go over to pick her up she scoots away around the table, under the bed etc. When I go get a treat and say sit, she sits, I give her the treat and she lets me pick her up. I can't figure it out why she does this and it's very annoying. She is 14 months and I'm hoping it's a stage she's going through. |
