what do i do ??? hi all we are thinking of buying a motorhome to wander round our beautiful islands, our problem is our 18 month old yorkie sophie. she would of course be coming with us but she would have to be permanently tethered to someone or something !! she would just run off and not come back if she saw something... this thought is making me miserable and putting me off getting one, out here there are no safe spaces to let her off to practce re call, she does nt do it in our back garden, she so stubborn !!! she is the only dog i have had thats like this !! any thoughts anyone ???? |
I don't have any real thoughts on the recall if she won't do it but I do know that my Yorkies (who are also not great at the recall comand) are wonderful travelers. They are great in camers and great in long long road trips. I really don't think you'll have a problem just keep her on a leash when out. I love traveling with mine. We have traveled from Alaska to Florida by car twice. No problems and even better for you since you won't have to worry about hotels. Leash on before getting out of the car and all was good. ;) I can say they really enjoyed it as well. :) |
Forgot to say that I always think it's best for a dog as small as a Yorkie to always be leashed anyway for thier own safety, even if they are good at the recall command. Just my thoughts...:) |
Well what about a play pen for her? When you are stationary and camping out it may work...then just on the lead when she is in a position to scoot off. |
thankyou , I just feel sorry for her being tied to the van all day if we are out by the sea or on the beach parked, the only time she would be fre is at night when we are in the van with the doors shut.she travells really well in the car, she has her own seat and i know she enjoys it, she used to be off lead on walks but one day she decided nt to cme back and its been like it since dont know what changed her now i dont trust her at all . |
thats a good idea but she would jump out !! she jumps on 5 foot walls whenwe are walking!! she s like a mountain goat wall climbing is her speciality lol !! |
I have a jack that jumps out of EVERYTHING! We haVE tried baby gates and even tried putting tables up to block areas off. But we found a play pen that is taller then 5 foot and he stays in there just fine. See if you can get a very TALL pen |
Think of it this way...you may feel bad putting her on a leash....but you'll feel even worse if she runs off and never comes back. You're not trying to be a mean mommy..you're just trying to make your baby safe. Just try to find a longer leash so she can have more space to roam around. Have fun exploring! :D |
I agree, you need a leash. Have fun. |

Gez, I don't think I could leave my babies tethered outside all day. Can't you leave her in the RV until you come back? Leaving her tethered and unattended is an open invitation for someone to steal her. And you may have to adjust your schedule on how long you'll be away while she's in the RV so that she's not alone so long. How about a stroller? On the days that you bring her with you and she/you get tired you could put her in a stroller... that way she'd still be with you but out of harms way. I just think that you made a commitment to her and you should try to include her in your plans as much as possilble. Dogs are pack animals and need to be with others. Have a good time and take lots of pictures :) |
A stroller is a good idea... (I don't think she is planning leaving the pooch while tied up, just tying her to keep the rascal safe instead of running away). |
How about enrolling her in an obedience training class? |
She couldn't be with you by the sea or on the beach on her leash instead of tied to the van? I would never tie her to the van, you never know what could happen while you are away. Part of the fun of traveling with her would be to take her onto the beach with you I think. ;) |
2 Attachment(s) We travel with our two yorkies all the time, they are not good with call back either;) We take them camping , to B&B's and self catering's, we have an xpen with a lid.. it is wonderful, and we also use a long rope, attached to something, with both their leads tied to the other end. This gives them a nice long length to be free to wonder around on. This works well on a beach too, we tie the rope to a chair or our umbrella. This way we can all relax, knowing they are safe and they are free to wonder, just a little way. You can see how well this works in the pics. Good luck and have fun with your baby!:D |
