Mute Yorkie? I just got my new puppy. He is full of energy, perky and plays quite normally but he is mute or nearly. I can hear him bark but it is very very very faint. The breeder told me his condition before I bought him and she said she's had some like him before and they were ok and lived long healthy life. She gives one month guarantee and I have him scheduled for a vet check in july. I was just curious if other people have had mute yorkie too. Johanne :animal37 Daddy :animal36 and Chewie :aimeeyork |
Hi Chewie, Congrats on your new puppy! How old is he? We got Gizmo at 12 weeks and he also had a very week bark I thought something was wrong with him....... you should hear him now at 6 months, let's just say I miss the 12 week barking lol. By the way I see you're from Rosemere is that Qc if so we are practically neighbors. Oh yes and welcome to yt you'll see there are great people here who are very friendly and helpfull here, I'm sure you'll love it here. |
Hmmm..since you sound like you're near each other and the OP mentioned her breeder said she had other dogs with this soft bark before....IDK..just gotta wonder. Let me know.. Welcome to YT! :welcome4: |
Ive never heard of a yorkie with a condition that made them mute. Is he deaf also or can he hear just not make sounds? |
I have a friend with a yorkie puppy who had the weakest bark I had ever heard. At 12 weeks it was little more than a very faint squeak and you had to be right next to her to hear it. She is now 23 weeks and she has the cutest "little dog" bark, perfect for someone living in an apartment ;) |
i have heard and about it and i actually met a mute yorkie years ago... she is healthy otherwise. I would think that the biggest challenge is how would they call for help if they ever need to do so.... Other than that all else should be fine... I would never breed, for clear reasons, to produce mute or near mute dogs... well... it may be just as bad as a "yapper"... |
Congrats on your new baby though... I hope you enjoy her and you never know... she may be hiding a "lion" roar ... |
When I first got Gizmo at 12 weeks, he couldn't bark. I believed that he was mute. When he was about six or seven months old one night for no reason at all he jumped off the couch and started barking. It got louder and louder, I think it just took him a little longer to figure out how to bark loud. |
Mute yorkie Chewie is 9 weeks old and he is not deaf. He runs at me when I call him. He barks but it's like a mouse sneezing when he does. I am sure I've heard a toon on tv with that sound. It is really cute lol but I am also concerned a bit that I won't hear him if he's hurt so I always keep him near me. The breeder said that he may find his "voice" when he gets older or he might not but it should not bother him healthwise. Hope she's right. I quite attached to him already. I also have a one year old toy poodle that barks like crazy so it's quite refreshing to hear my yorkie LOL Actually I live in Laval, Qc. Rosemère is 5 min away and I got Chewie in Ste-Dorothée. Sounds like you are either from one of those places or in Montreal. Johanne :animal37 Daddy :animal36 and Chewie :aimeeyork |
i think your best bet is to visit a vet and check your yorkie out. chances are that he'll get a larger voice as he ages, but its always safer to check. |
Bella didn't make a sound for about 6 months. Then my daughter's BF was playing fetch with them and didn't throw the ball again when she brought it back. She got miffed and did her very first bark (awwww!). Unfortunately, she hasn't shut up since  . And she has a very SHRILL bark, too! It would have been nice if she had remained silent ;) |
What a small world chewie I'm also from Laval, got Gizmo in Ste-Calixte. |
I have a Yorkie that can't bark!! :aimeeyorkHe will be a year old next month. My vet has heard the whisper that comes out when he tries, and she said she has never heard of this before! Heads up.... When I took him in to have 8 of his teeth pulled, they had to put him under and the vet told me they had to get all the emergency equipment ready and on stand-by because he really struggled to come out of the anethesia!!!! He is happy, healthy, energenic and perfect in every other way!!!! :DLike you, I enjoy the quiet as my Sheltie is the yapper in our house! |
I got Apple @ 2 1/2 months, and she didn't bark, and I wondered why? Then about 4 months, I heard a little bark, and thought it was so cute, but not harsh or shrill...Now she's almost 8 months old, and she has a good healthy bark, but it's not annoying, and she only does it when someone comes to the door, or she "thinks" she sees something out the patio door at night...I hope your little one is like this, because one of my fears was the incessant, shrill barking, and, so far, so good...So if your little one has a small bark, enjoy it....that's awesome!!! |
Pablo did not start barking until he was 6 months old. |
