Do You Take Your Yorkie to a Dog Park?? Think Again I originally posted this info on another discussion, but felt it deserved it's own thread. The local newspaper devoted 5 articles to this tragedy in a week, that is how much of an impact it made on the community... OMG! How absolutely devastating! I am in tears. My heart breaks for the owner of that little dog. I am frightened when I see a big dog when I'm walking Abby. I scoop her up right away. You just never know. |
You never know what to expect when bringing your dog out in public- the local dog park by us had rules that include NO LEASHES being used, I ALWAYS use a leash I know its not following the rules, but I couldnt stand it if either of my two got out or if another dog were to hurt them. One of our last trips we had a German Shepherd pup trying to play with Roxie and she was shaking and so nervous by him jumping around her, his owner thought is was funny! It is so awful that the other owner is now taking responsibility for their dog and never took the time after adopting!:mad: |

It broke my heart reading that report. I was quite jealous that you guys have dog parks and we don't in the uk but I keep hearing all these horror stories about them now ,that I have changed my view. When Im out on a walk with Tia and she is off leash and a dog is coming the other way, I 1. look at the owner to see how much control they have over their dog 2. Look at the breed ,not always the size and then use my judgment on if its safe for Tia to stay off leash or to put her on.There has been the odd occasion I should have put her on or visa versa but I go on gut instinct . I don't bother asking the owner if their dog is friendly anymore because a couple of people have said yes and its tried taking a chunk out of her. Im sure not all dog parks are bad , obviously it depends on what dogs are there , but if we had them here I WOULD NOT TAKE TIA THERE! |
I can't imagine my Jemma being off lead anywhere. They may think they are big dogs, but they don't have a chance with the real "big" dogs Carol and Jemma |
:eek:OMG!!!!!!! NO I don't take my Bella (Morkie) who is 4.8lbs. and only 10 months to ANY dog parks. She gets plenty of exercise on leash walking around the complex in our neighborhood. It is not worth the possibility of tragedy. I am fearful of those owners that THINK they have control of their dogs (large or small).....it ONLY takes a moment for disaster to strike. This owner will not get her beloved pet back and that memory of her beloved pet dying in front of her will be etched in her mind. My thoughts and prayers go out to her. |
Beyond the concern of big dog attacks...the threat of parvo is always present. Several times our dog parks have been closed due to parvo. I never take mine to any dog park. We'll play at home in our yard. |
I have never taken them to a dog park. This is exactly why. Even taking them on a walk is scary anymore! |
What a horrible thing to happen...I can't tell you how many times I have heard stories like this one. Larger dogs attacking smaller dogs or children that are the sweetest dog they have ever had. I know there are several people on here that own pits. I too blame to owners (sometimes) for the way that their animals behave, When it comes to this breed I believe they should be muzzled when they are in with other dogs or out for walks. I DON'T want to get bashed for this comment...this in only MY OPINION. My heart goes out to this woman who had to witness her dog being tossed around and killed. |
I do frequent the dog park almost daily, Im not defending myself but I have seen posts and news articles and this has happened EVERYWHERE, not just dog parks, this can happen right in your own neighboorhood or even on a simple walk.. I am very very cautious at the dog park and keep my eyes open at all times. |
I dont take mine to the dog park its about 30 min drive away and I have a nice big regular park 5 mins away from me so we go there |
The closet park to me is 2 hours away. I feel with the three of them running around in the fenced yard is plenty of time for them to get their excercise. I don't think I'd ever take mine to the park, because of the above mentioned articles. |
I take my 65 pound dog to the dog park near us I'm always scared when little ones are in there cause the big dogs start running and I'm scared mine is gonna step on one. They have a puppy/little dog area but it's only like 15 feet by 15 feet not even enough for room for them. when they plan these parks it should have 2 areas of equal size for the big dogs and the little ones. |
