Greenies I had heard some bad things about these so thought I'd try to find something about it. I found this artcile and thought it was worth sharing with you all. Just never hurts to be aware of anything that could possibly hurt our babies! CNN.com - Owners: Dog treats killed our pets - Feb 15, 2006 |
I think last year the greenies were reformulated so they break down better now. I haven't heard of any problems with them since then. |

I hope they did change it. I just hate to see a dog injured by something it should be enjoying. I had just heard of this and thought it was worth posting. I gave Roxie a greenie once and didn't really like much about it. They kind of grossed me out and gave me that feeling of I don't think I want her having that. Not sure what anyone else thinks of the Ziggies but I give those to Roxie once in a while. They are of a softer nature and she just chews on it here and there. She does good with those. They are the ones that fit into the Kong toy. |
Honey Bear gets the teenie greenies. She is just about five months old and is teething....she loves to chew on the greenies. They break down better than rawhides. Haven't tried pig ears or hooves....those gross me out! As with any treat, just make sure you supervise your baby when he/she has one. :) |
A representative from the Greenie Company came on YT, and said the product had been reformulated. When asked if they were now 100% digestible, there was no response. I would not recommend a product that was not 100% digestible. Certain products say they are 99% digestible, and a small piece the "size of a grain of rice" may not be digestible. Well, if you have enough of those pieces, it could cause an intestinal obstruction. Greenies wouldn't bother me in a bigger breed dog, but for a yorkie whose intestines are very tiny in diameter, this would bother me. If you choose to feed Greenies be aware of the symptoms that of an intestinal obstruction, these are constipation with vomiting. See a vet fast as this could mean an obstruction and gangrene can set in rapidly. It can be very difficult to prove what caused the obstruction. I prefer to use chewing sticks that are 100% digestable, such as Bully Sticks. |
I wont be letting my dogs have Greenies ever again!!!!! My girlfriend bought some over for the dogs and they were enjoying them, all of a sudden my dog sounds like she was gaging:eek:. I open her mouth and that Greenie was like a hard goo that I had to scrape out of her throat and off of her tounge:(. Had I not been here she probly could have choked. |
I was think about getting theses for Caoimhe, but not now. |
Not Greenies but Rawhide My mother in laws maltese/yorkie mix used to chew on rawhides all the time- one night my husband and I stopped by while they were out and their boy was standing straight up with his head held high. I went to pick him up like normal and he started screatching! I put him down and then talked with him and tried agian he had been chewing on rawhide and it hardened up in his throat. We took him to the vet and they got it out but it was awful! Our vet recommends no rawhides of any size for these little guys. |
