Making bows I decided to try my hand at making bows for Phoebe, I was very happy with how they came out except for one problem...the bows I have purchased are nice and stiff...does anyone know the trick to stiffening the ribbon? Thanks in advance! |
They make a product that you can spray on that stiffens the bows. I'm sure there are other ways.. and i'm sure someone will come along to share :) |
Well I make hairbows for my daughter and I use hairspray on them... I soak them good and let them dry. Also you can use spray starch it works but alittle more expensive. Let me know how they turn out =) |
Or you can make your own liquid starch. 1. 1/2 cup potato starch flour (better than the cornstarch) in 2.5 cups water. 2. mix the starch into a small amount of cold water, and while stirring to keep it from settling out, add boiling water. The boiling water will cook the starch and turn it transparent. |
hairspray!! I should have thought of that! Thank you, I'll give it a try, if it doesn't work I'll try looking around the craft store. Thanks guys! |

I buy Sta-Flo and spray it on the bows after I form and sew them but before I add the embelishments. I have also heard that you can starch and bake them like you would korker ribbon. The sta-flo is only about 2.00 for a really big bottle. I would recommend using dowel rods in your loops while the starch is drying. I hope this helps :) |
There are a couple of products on the market that are made specifically for stiffening ribbon. One is called Stiffen Quick and another is called something like Stiffy Stuff. Both products work exceptionally well. |
