Hair issues... Back last summer Roxie was poisoned. She recovered quickly but the poison did effect her intestines and her hair. She was on prescription food for three months to help rebuild her insides but her hair has been a struggle. I also want to say that Roxie is our first yorkie and had silky smooth hair before, no it is so dry and once it gets to a certain length it starts breaking. She is on a high quality food, but not sure why we cant get her hair back. Any tips on products, grooming, anything we appreciate it.;) |
Interestingly, Melatonin is used for fur growth in ferrets and dogs. If you google "alopecia X and melatonin" - you'll see some research in that area....but it's used when the fur loss is related to hormone imbalance. I don't know if it would work for you, but maybe if the poison had affected her hormonally, it may. A Vet Dermatologist would have the best answer for you, but they aren't cheap (been there :)). |
I tried to find some info but didn't find a ton, I did find that poisoning in dogs does cause alopecia.. but I was unable to find if it is something that can be changed or if it effects the hair permenently (did you vet let you know?) Anyway, if Roxy is on a great diet already then a change in food probably won't help. Have you tried adding missing link to her food? Maybe flax seed oil or fish oil supplements. As far as treating the hair from the outside, how short is it when it breaks off? I would think keeping her in a puppy cut would probably be best and using great moisturizing hair products, maybe even oil treatments. I'm really glad that Roxy survived the poison, what was it that happened? |
I'm not sure if this will affect the condition of the hair but what shampoo do you use? Chase uses Buddy wash and the conditioner. We just ordered MinkSheen shampoo conditioner all in one. Both are popular here on the forum. Chase's hair looked super shiny after the MinkSheen but I love the smell of the Buddy wash and his hair is shiny with that too. We also used fish oil from the vet over the winter and his hair was much shinier. Hope this helps! :) |

Cloud Star Buddy Wash Dog Shampoos at PETCO Petco seems to have Buddy wash on sale. You need to get the conditioning rinse also. They also make a "between washes" spray that freshens them up and makes it a lot easier to brush. This might help coat the hair for you and maybe result in less breakage. I'm just thinking about my hair when I apply the silicone shine/heat protectant products before styling it. I'm not sure but maybe it's worth a try. The smell is very nice. I have the lavender and mint blend. They make others but Chase smells yummylicious for days after. I used it on his face and was very careful to avoid his eyes. We tried the MinkSheen on Saturday and while he was VERY shiny...still is actually....I'm not really thrilled with the smell. It's intense. It has things in it which repel mosquitos etc. An advantage is that it's an all in one. So, I suggest either -- prefer the Buddy Wash over all. :) |

One last note....when I used teh Mink Sheen I did not apply it to his face..I used a gentle tearless puppy formula. |
Thanks I will have to try it out. I just hope that I can get her hair back! I love it long and dont want to cut it! |
