I'm so upset with Jemma's teeth

I only saw she had doubles on her lower cannines. I just checked her mouth again and she has upper doubles AND in the back along the sides, it looks like all doubles coming in, not sure yet.
Jemma is 7 months now and 4 pounds. At what age do you wait before they get pulled. My goodness if all those have to come out, she is going to be hurting so bad. I won't know what to do to help her. Damn, I hate owning a dog sometimes.
Thank you for any help

I usually wait till a yr old then have pulled. give her things to chew on. toy breeds are really bad for double teeth. I know what you mean to owning dogs sometimes. love them but can be a pain at times too!Ha

Jemma 06-14-2009 03:58 AM

Are they really in a lot of pain? Do you have to give them soft foods for a couple of days? Will the soft foods lodge into the little holes where the extractions were? I just have a feeling she is going to have many pulled.
I've read here where doing spay and teeth removal at the same time is better. Yet I've read small procedures should be spaced. I've only owned the larger breed, never a little one.
Does anyone know "why" this happens?
Thanks so much

She may still lose them. I would get her one of Merrick's flossies. The way they curl gives better tooth coverage. It may just be enough to loosen them.

They hurt little my vet gives a pain shot and some med for home. but usually i might give them one dose and by the nexy daythey are fine. it good to have it all done at the same time, that way they only go under one time. she well be fine.

Sweet Apple 06-14-2009 05:03 AM

My Apple is 7 1/2 months old, today, and I just called my vet last Thursday, and asked about him her double canines upper and lower...He said not to worry about it 'till she was a year old, or, if I was going to have her spayed between now and then, he'd pull them at the same time...Since I'm waiting to spay her, 'till she's 12 or 18 months, I'm taking his advice and not worrying about it 'till then...He also said they may come out before she's a year, and then it will be one less expense...Hope this helps...

I had Roxie's done when she was spayed. She really didn't seem to notice it. It's just like when humans permanent teeth come in and baby tooth is still there. It's really not painful to get that baby tooth out. After hers were done she ate her food as normal. It all just sounds worse than it is. I think having the permanent teeth there makes it so there is no unprotected part of the gum. They heal so fast. For me I wouldn't want to wait too long. Food and stuff gets caught between there and yorkies are already prone to tooth decay problems. I think it would be uncomfortable trying to eat with all that food getting packed imbetween there.

Jackson had four teeth pulled and he was fine! He got it done while getting neutered and you could tell he was a bit uncomfortable but once I gave him his pain pill, he was fine. He was eating regular dry kibble the next day. Dogs tolerate pain WAY better than humans.

Missy needed 4 removed with her spay. She had to have soft food for a week. She didn't seem to be in pain, however she was taking pain medication for the spay surgery so that may have helped.

Yorkies are a wonderful breed, but one of the weakest attributes is their teeth. They don't always lose the baby all an their own, and most of us have had to have them pulled during a spay or neuter. For those who are choosing to keep them intact, I wouldn't wait much longer than a year to have the teeth pulled, the double row leads to problems with the permanent teeth. You need to be extra diligent in caring for a Yorkie's teeth, especially when they have the double row, as food builds up between the rows. Tartar is a major problem, and we brush as well as use Petzlife to reduce tartar. I also believe that a hard chewing stick like Merricks bully sticks help scrape tartar away. You are right, though, there is a lot of responsibility that comes with owning a pet, and they are not really for the "care free" person.

Stormy had two extra canines when I brought her home at 1.5 years old. The lady never told me and I didn't notice until a bit after I got her when the vet mentioned it to me. I was going to have them pulled out but in Feb and March each one fell out on their own. Her breath improved immediately and that is how I noticed they fell out on their own!

Coco had some retained baby teeth pulled when she was spayed, about 7 months old. I don't remember how many but there wasn't really anything special I was told to do for her, with the exception of the instructions for after her spay of course. I think at the time I was feeding soft food though so that would have been a non-issue.

Don't worry about the pain from removing baby teeth, Winston had to have 13 removed...I don't think it seemed to bother him at all. The vet said his mouth looked like a sharks.LOL!
